FONDA — William Dutcher was recognized as Caregiver of the Year by the Montgomery County Legislature at their meeting in October. He is the primary caregiver for his wife, Sandra.
Bill came to Fort Plain as a child, where his father opened Dutcher’s Shoe Store. After high school he served in the Navy for four years, then worked at the family business until it closed in the mid 1980s. He worked in manufacturing for a time, then at Lee Publications for 25 years as a production supervisor. His wife Sandy is known for her job at the counter of the local bakery.
The Dutchers have been married nearly 50 years and still do most things together, like going to church, the local diner, or the Senior Center for lunch. They have twin grown sons who visit them often.
Montgomery County Office for Aging Inc. assists Bill through the Caregiver Respite Program. A home health aide comes twice a week for a few hours so he can get a much needed break. Bill uses this time to run errands, have coffee at Stewart’s, or just sit and relax in the park.
