Art on Film
Fri, July 4, 2008 @ 10:59AM
I asked Tiffany Smith recently if she had any videos on YouTube from events at her gallery in Johnstown. Her gallery is in the former AME Zion Church building on Prospect Street in Johnstown, and it's quite impressive. From this video, you'd think the place were in SoHo or Berkeley. The video documents an exhibit of work by Michael Shapcott that took place earlier this year. Check out the gallery Web site for details of current and upcoming exhibits.

Mind Your Netiquette
Mon, April 28, 2008 @ 3:11PM
Emily Post penned tens of thousands of words on proper social behavior - in other words, manners. In 1922, when Emily first wrote her definitive guide to etiquette, she said, "Wherever two people come together and their actions affect one another, you have etiquette." Wow, little did she realize that those two people would be able to meet on the Internet and their actions have the possibility to be observed by millions of others. Yes, there have been a great deal of cultural changes in eighty-six years but does that really give permission to people to be cruel when hiding behind a fictitious name? In the short time that our new website has been operating, since February of this year, we have had 4,682 comments on stories and blogs. Undoubtedly, a few more even while I am typing. I value the opinion of our readers and how they react to what we are reporting. What you have to say does really matter.

The Village people and the YMCA
Fri, June 20, 2008 @ 8:26PM
Historically speaking the YMCA in its current form has a hotel-like atmosphere, and the referenced zoning ordinance that was used to classify it as such is probably as old or older as the YMCA itself. Since the inception of residence in 1844 the YMCA it has been described as “hotel-like” as far as providing rooms or residency, mainly for single males, providing a Christian based alternative to a lifestyle of gambling, whiskey and women. At one point in the 1940’s the YMCA had more rooms (100,000) than any hotel chain in existence at the time.
