Handbuilding: Slab Sculpture, taught by Jenny Clay
NORTHVILLE — The Sacandaga Valley Arts Network has announced a workshop in handbuilding pottery will be offered in June.
The workshop, "Handbuilding: Slab Sculpture," will be taught by Jenny Clay, the summer artist in residence at the Bellwether Studio at The Orendaga, 732 S. Main St.
It take place in five sessions from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays: June 24 and 26 and July 1, 3 and 8. Space is available for up to five students.
"Handbuilding pottery is a stunning alternative and supplement to using the potter’s wheel," Clay said in a news releas. "In this class, we will be working with terra cotta clay, using sculpting techniques in combination with slab construction to create large, abstract surfaces perfect for image transfer. The technique allows for strong, simple forms to become a canvas for decoration."
Students will be introduced to the image-transfer process as well as new, colorful, low-fire glazing techniques to finish their pieces.
The cost will be $105, or $100 for SVAN members, plus a materials and firings fee of $50.
For more information or to register, call the Orendaga or see www.svanarts.org.
