Fear of Poetry

April 25, 2012 - Bill Ackerbauer

Here we are in late April, and once again I've let most of National Poetry Month slip by me without blogging about the subject. Well, as if on cue, I caught wind today that one of my former Johnstown High School schoolmates had an article about poetry published in yesterday's Houston Chronicle.

The writer is Joseph Campana, who now is an English professor at Rice University. (I've mentioned Joe in previous poetic posts.) In this new publication, he discusses the reasons some people feel alienated from poetry and prescribes possible remedies for those who fear to tread outside the safe, familiar confines of prose. ("Prozac" not being among them, alas.)
