FLORIDA — Rain didn’t stop Hero/Beech-Nut representatives, local officials and state leaders from celebrating the start of new construction Wednesday.
Hero/Beech-Nut conducted a ground-breaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction of its 550,000-square-foot, $124 million baby-food factory in the Florida Business Park on Route 5S.
New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, congressional candidate Paul Tonko, state Sen. Hugh T. Farley, R-Niskayuna, and various county officials attended the event.

Viva la Farmers Market

Let there be much rejoicing: Our local farmers markets have started to open for the season! I understand the Canajoharie market opened this past Saturday, and the Gloversville market will open this Saturday morning, May 17. I'm particularly excited about the Gloversville market, because it will be in its new location with an open-air pavilion between Bleecker and Elm streets downtown. Judge Vincent DeSantis deserves a huge pat on the back for all his work on the project. He put up the pavilion by the sweat of his own brow and with some state grant funds and the help of several hearty volunteers. Being a Johnstown resident, I'm jealous of Gloversville folks -- Gloversvillains, I've heard them called :) -- because their farmers market has a prime time and place: Saturday mornings in a downtown spot with lots of parking and room for the vendors to spread out.

Emily Post penned tens of thousands of words on proper social behavior - in other words, manners. In 1922, when Emily first wrote her definitive guide to etiquette, she said, "Wherever two people come together and their actions affect one another, you have etiquette." Wow, little did she realize that those two people would be able to meet on the Internet and their actions have the possibility to be observed by millions of others. Yes, there have been a great deal of cultural changes in eighty-six years but does that really give permission to people to be cruel when hiding behind a fictitious name? In the short time that our new website has been operating, since February of this year, we have had 4,682 comments on stories and blogs. Undoubtedly, a few more even while I am typing. I value the opinion of our readers and how they react to what we are reporting. What you have to say does really matter.

From Education to Poverty to retail

There is a lot of concern in Gloversville about our prosperity or lack of it. Everyone has a view on the proposed retail expansion that will hopefully bring in the tax dollars and help our town to grow. Of course by now I suppose that all of you readers know my opinion of the anticipated retail expansion for Gloversville. In truth retail is necessary for the community, we have to have it. The concerns that I have are as the old saying goes; “too much of a good thing” and the other concern is the fact that we will be subsidizing retail expansion to companies that make billions in profit annually; this is wrong.
