Historic homes
Wed, September 24, 2008 @ 2:57PM
Hey, did you hear about this? I'm not exactly the Better Homes & Gardens type, myself, but this announcement caught my eye for local history: The Johnstown City Historic Architecture Tour will take place Saturday, Sept.27 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A limited number of tickets for the event are still available at the Johnstown Public Library (762-8317) and the Fulton County Regional Chamber of Commerce (725-0641). Ticket price per person is $25. Eight private homes and as many public sites will be open for the tour. The homes include: 10 No. Perry St. - Jonathan and Tara Sweet This home was featured on the HGTV program “Rezoned." This longtime commercial property has been beautifully transformed to include a private residence for the Sweets on the top floors. 107 S. William St.

No more comments.
Fri, September 5, 2008 @ 3:34PM
On February 12th the new Leader-Herald website debuted. One of the new features was the ability for readers to comment on stories and other areas of the on-line paper. As of today, we have 2,329 individuals who are registered to participate in this feature. As of today we have received a total of 23,021 comments. That is tremendous. We are very pleased to see that, for the most part, readers have taken on the ownership of what is happening in the area and beyond to express their opinions and solutions through this avenue. We have only had a very small percentage of abusers on the site and unfortunately have taken away their privileges. Of course, it is not full proof, or may I say fool proof, and some have managed to return under another name. There are some areas of the on-line paper that we do not allow comments on. Obituaries being one. As of today, I have also made the decision to exclude comments on the letters to the editors. The reason is simple.

The Big Apple Sports Birthday Blog for September 30
Tue, September 30, 2008 @ 4:51PM
The Big Apple Sports Birthday celebrant for September 30 is the former Brooklyn Dodger pitcher, Johnny Podres, born in Witherbee, NY, in 1932. When I was born, my parents and two brothers lived in a five room flat on Leonard Street, in Amsterdam, NY. From the front porch of that apartment, you could see the front entrance of Isabel’s Restaurant, which was far and away the Rug City’s most successful eatery back then. By the early sixties, I had become addicted to Isabel’s French fries. For just one dollar, they’d give you a huge greasy brown paper bag of the fresh cut potato treats and to this day, I’ve never tasted any better. I would always wait by the bar of the restaurant for my order to get finished and while waiting I would take turns staring at the steaks and live lobsters in the cooler that used to sit next to the kitchen door and the autographed picture of Johnny Podres that use to hang on the wall.

The Village people and the YMCA
Fri, June 20, 2008 @ 8:26PM
Historically speaking the YMCA in its current form has a hotel-like atmosphere, and the referenced zoning ordinance that was used to classify it as such is probably as old or older as the YMCA itself. Since the inception of residence in 1844 the YMCA it has been described as “hotel-like” as far as providing rooms or residency, mainly for single males, providing a Christian based alternative to a lifestyle of gambling, whiskey and women. At one point in the 1940’s the YMCA had more rooms (100,000) than any hotel chain in existence at the time.
