Give families time to practice their faith
I am the rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Johnstown. I discovered this weekend that a member of our Teen Bible Study will no longer be able to attend Sunday morning classes because the Fonda-Fultonville marching band, which she belongs to, has scheduled practices for all day Saturday and most of the day on Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. I fully support extra-curricular activities, and I belonged to a drum and bugle corps when I was a teen. However, that band would never have dreamed of forcing a family to choose between practice and church. I understand the importance of the separation of church and state and church and school. However, we seem to have come to a point of separation of school and family. There must be a way where we can provide the necessary access to extra-curricular activities without families having to choose to sacrifice their involvement in their faith communities. Could we make 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.
