The presidential contenders participated in the first of three presidential debates Friday hosted at the University of Mississippi in Oxford to discuss foreign policy and national security. Amanda Johnson considers the presidential debates an opportune time for viewers to see the nation’s presidential contenders up close and personal, unfettered by the analysis of the news media. “I think it is important to watch,” said Johnson, 19, “especially for the youth, because it is the best way to become familiar with the opposing views and each candidates’ plans up front, without the middle man you would get from just watching news reports.” Sen. John McCain of Arizona, the Republican presidential nominee, and Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, the Democratic presidential nominee, were to stand behind lecterns as they took part in the scheduled 90-minute free form debate and fielded questions from moderator Jim Lehrer of PBS.
