Saying Goodbye to a Legend
March 31 was a dreary Monday morning. I had been looking forward to this day for months. Finally it was here. It was opening day at Yankee Stadium.
Not only was it opening day, but it was the final opening day at that stadium. Lucky for me and my friends, we had what we thought to be impossible tickets to get. I woke up early, eager to be on my way to the greatest stadium on the planet.
We departed from my house around 7 a.m., decked out in Yankee gear. After a seemingly endless ride, we were finally in the Bronx. After the long walk to the stadium, we finally entered the gate labeled “Bleachers.”
Our whole group was excited to be sitting with the infamous Section 39 bleacher creatures, anchored by a bald man named Vinny who starts all the famous bleacher chants, including the Roll Call. Unfortunately, slowly but surely, the rain came down. The tarp had been on the field all day, and at about 2:30 p.m., the big announcement was made.
