How about the Town of Northampton giving the Village of Northville over$3,300 In "over payment" of the phone bill, without a voucher by the village.

The Town of Florida clerk paid back all the money. Her system was shoddy but there was no criminal intent. I have been taking my mowers and snow blowers to her shop for 30 years and she is as honest as the day is long. Unfortunately, running a private business and conducting town business at the same time was too much and is no excuse for missing funds. However, she is far from being a Bray or Schocetti type. Remember those two? They had to get up pretty early to fool the EDC Board. But they did, and straight out of a script for The Andy Griffith show the bumpkins were scammed. Eventually the media got tired of pursuing the matter and the millions they lined their pockets with are gone. Who said crime doesn’t pay?

It is the sad truth that you can't trust anyone but elected officials needs to put safeguards in place so that this can't happen. Imagine that a husband and wife keep the books for the village of Fultonville and they don't live in the village?? Until the officials who appoint these people get their act together to prevent this stuff we will read more and more of this and those in charge will be "shocked" that they had no idea this was happening.

The people keeping the books should not be the ones handling the money.

It is a sad truth that you cannot trust anyone. You have to have control and many eyes on any system to prevent thefts and misuse of funds. The larger the funds the more eyes you have to have on those funds to prevent collusion that leads to losses. Think that maybe greater oversight of the EDC may have lead to a better outcome?
