South Glens Falls perfect in 13-0 win over Gloversville

GLOVERSVILLE — Marissa Carpenter was 21-for-21.

The South Glens Falls pitcher faced 21 Gloversville batters in Wednesday’s 13-0 Foothills finale win over Gloversville. She threw a perfect game, striking out 13.

The closest Gloversville came to breaking up the perfect game was with one out in the seventh inning when Ashley Rowback grounded to the right side.

Carpenter had to rush to cover first for the throw from second baseman Lauren Carruthers.

“Sometimes you lose the perfect game on that chip shot and a lot of teams won’t be able to make that play,” South High coach Laurie Ciuffetelli said. “But she hustled over there. She was looking for that one. She was moving to get there.”

It was Carpenter’s second perfect game of the season. This time she got some help from Kristen Funk, hitting in the number nine slot.

Funk was 3-for-3 at the plate with three long home runs and eight RBIs. Her first dinger went to the opposite field and landed in the middle of the netting covering the batting cage behind the right field wall.

Gloversville athletic director and interim coach Mike DeMagistris said run support like that, coupled with a handful of Gloversville errors, makes it hard to beat an undefeated defending champion.

“Their number nine hitter hits three home runs that total nearly 700 feet,” DeMagistris said. “Then, in that fourth inning, we gave them five outs. They capitalized on them. They’re the defending Class A state champions and when you give them five outs, they’re going to make you pay.”

DeMagistris said Carpenter impressed him and that she lived up to her billing. She kept the Huskies off-balance with a good changeup, he said.

Ciuffetelli said Funk sometimes overswings, trying to do too much. She hit her first home run of the season in the Bulldogs’ previous game after being sick all day. Funk said she has been more relaxed at the plate and stopped forcing the issue.

“I’ve been struggling all year,” Funk said. “I just got out there and I was relaxed. I’m not tense, I have a loose grip. I’m just going for singles and the rest happens.”

Carpenter was 3-for-4 with two doubles. Alexa Toole was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI, while Amanda Perry was 2-for-4 with a run for the Bulldogs (15-0 overall, 14-0 Foothills Council).

For the Huskies, Sammi George was the only player who didn’t strike out.

Senior catcher Katelynn Benson made Gloversville’s hardest contact in her first at bat, when she lined the ball back to Carpenter, who caught the drive. Benson has been behind the plate this season to watch her pitcher, Mollee Putnam, take three line drives.

“I was surprised,” Benson said. “I was so scared it was going to hit her in the face, because of Mollee. I was like, ‘No. No.’”

Benson was behind the plate for all three bombs hit by Funk. She said the homers didn’t come on missed pitches, Funk just hit the ball hard.

“She just got a hold of them,” Benson said. “She’s a great hitter and we tried keeping them inside on her, but it didn’t work. We wanted to try to give her respect and not intentionally walk her.”

Funk came to the plate a fourth time and the Huskies were preparing to walk her with the bases empty, but Ciuffetelli decided to sub McKenzie Franke for Funk.

DeMagistris, who filled in for the final 11 games of the season as coach, said he was pleased with the way his players finished out the game.

“We hung in there and our kids played hard,” he said. “I can’t take anything away from our kids. The South High kids just hit line drives all game.”

Despite the perfect game, the Huskies maintained high spirits on senior day. They honored Benson, Sherrie Walensky and Kayla Ambrosino before the game. Gloversville finished the season 4-17-1 overall and 2-12 in the Foothills Council, but lost a lot of close games involving a single error-filled inning.

“Gloversville is notorious for having the one bad inning,” Benson said. “That’s where most of our errors happen and we end up losing. But they’re always close games and I love my team. I’ve been with them for four years and they’re great. I’m going to miss them a lot.”
