Brother frustrated by search for woman

Canajoharie man urges JPD to seek assistance

By MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: November 14, 2008

JOHNSTOWN - The brother of missing city woman Kellisue M. Ackernecht said Wednesday he's increasingly frustrated by the Johnstown Police Department's decision not to seek help from state police to help solve her more than six-week disappearance.

"I want some answers," Thomas Kilcullen said, although he added he is grateful for local police efforts so far.

Kilcullen, a Canajoharie resident, said he strongly urges the Johnstown Police Department to tap into more outside help, such as utilizing state police to help crack the case of his missing sister.

Ackernecht, 36, of 330 W. Main St., left her job at Rite Aid in Amsterdam just after 9:30 p.m. Sept. 30, police said. She was reported missing by her husband, Jayson Ackernecht, in the early morning hours of Oct. 1 - about the same time the car she was driving was found engulfed in fire at West Montgomery and Chestnut streets.

Kilcullen said he talked earlier this week to Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira, who he said assured him that city police are "doing the best they can."

But Kilcullen said he thinks Johnstown police should be doing more, such as asking state police for more help in combing the "Frog Hollow" area where the burned car was found and reinterviewing witnesses.

"I think the case is going sour," Kilcullen said.

"We're doing everything we can, everything humanly possible," Johnstown police Chief Gregory Horning said Thursday.

Kilcullen said he has talked to state police several times, and he said they told him they are willing to help with the investigation - with a manhunt or whatever is needed. He said he specifically talked with Investigator Karl Meybaum of the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Fonda.

"They're just waiting for the OK from the Johnstown Police Department," Kilcullen said.

Reached Wednesday at his office, Meybaum said, "The case is in the city because it's their case."

Meybaum said he "doesn't know enough about the case" to know whether state police should be called by Johnstown police.

"We've reached out to them and offered our assistance," the BCI investigator said.

In his opinion, Kilcullen said he thinks city police should have called in state police nearly 40 days ago.

State police did help with the search by use of one of its helicopters that hovered over the Frog Hollow area in October, but found nothing to tie into this case. The city Police Department has done foot searches with dogs.

The Johnstown police and the St. Johnsville Dive Team have combed the banks of the Cayadutta Creek leading nearly to Sammonsville.

Chris Clouston, one of Ackernecht's brothers, organized a search party Sunday in hopes of turning up something related to his sister. The search found nothing.

Kilcullen said state police officers have told him privately they "can't understand" why Johnstown police haven't called them into the case.

"I'm not saying [Johnstown police] are not doing their job," he said.

He suggested police look further into Jayson Ackernecht, who has declined comment to the media since doing an interview with The Leader-Herald when the missing person case first drew media attention.

Kellisue M. Ackernecht is 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. Her family says she has "short brown, naturally curly hair with red highlights."

The family also says Kellisue was last seen wearing tan slacks, a black shirt, new white sneakers, tan stockings and brown glasses.

People may call Johnstown police at 736-4021 with confidential information on the case.
