JOHNSTOWN - Gloversville resident Randy Green was indicted Monday on six counts, including second-degree murder, in connection with the Aug. 15 stabbing death of Raymond Pike on the Rail Trail in Gloversville.
Pike, 63, who was a registered sex offender living in Gloversville, was found dead on a bridge on the Rail Trail early that morning, his body riddled with stab wounds.
Green, 26, had allegedly been socializing with Pike in the days leading up to the murder. He was arrested later that same day.
Police said Green, Pike and another unidentified individual were walking on the trail on their way to Price Chopper when Green pulled out a hunting knife and stabbed Pike. The two had been drinking and arguing throughout the day, police said, and began arguing again as they walked on the trail.
The indictment revealed that in addition to multiple stab wounds to his heart, lungs and kidneys, which killed him, Pike's throat also was slashed, said Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira.
Police said Green, after admitting his involvement in Pike's death, claimed part of the argument was over an alleged stash of child pornography Pike had.
Sira said while Green may use the claim as part of his defense, there is no evidence to support it.
"The fact remains, [police] did not locate any child pornography [in Pike's apartment]," Sira said Tuesday.
After the stabbing, police said Green went to a camp on the Great Sacandaga Lake in Mayfield, where he tried to burn his clothing and the knife he allegedly used to stab Pike.
Pike and Green each had a history with local police.
Green has been arrested several times since 2001, including three charges of disorderly conduct, second-degree assault, criminal mischief, second-degree harassment and violating parole.
Pike was arrested by Johnstown police in 1990 and later convicted of second-degree sodomy for an incident involving a 13-year-old boy. He was sentenced to two to six years in state prison. Since 2001, Pike had been arrested four times. He was charged with petit larceny, trespassing and twice failing to notify police when he changed his address.
In addition to the murder indictment, Green was was charged with one count of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon and felony tampering with physical evidence.
Sira said one of the assault counts claims Green struck Pike in the head with a board.
The case was assigned to County Court Judge Polly Hoye.
Hoye will set an arraignment date. Sira said she expects the arraignment to occur before Christmas.
