"Adirondack Stories Il, 101 More Historical Sketches" written by Marty Podskoch, illustrated by Sam Glanzman and edited by David Hayden recently was released.

Podskoch is making a local tour of bookshops to speak and sign books. He will appear at 7 p.m. Tuesday the Northville Public Library, 341 S. Third St. and at 7 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Mayfield Library in Mayfield High School, 27 School St.

It is the second book of illustrated "Adirondack Stories," as seen in The Sunday Leader-Herald, that have appeared in newspapers during the past two years.

It contains stories of hermits, forestry, hotels, summer camps, writers, artists, animals, mining, farming, canals, boats, sports, amusement parks and other subject.

According to a news release, Glanzman is well known in comic book circles. For 60 years, he has been producing illustrations for comic books. He is considered by many to be a top war artist. Here are a few books that he has illustrated: "Hercules," "War at Sea," "Army Heroes," "Sgt. Rock," "Kona," "Attu," "Spitfire Comics," "Zorro," "Turock," "The Loser's Special," "Space Adventures," "DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest," "Our Army at War" and "Air War Stories."

He was born in Baltimore, Md., in 1924. At first, Glanzman began working for publishers such as Centaur and Harvey. He then served aboard a destroyer, the USS Stevens, in the South Pacific during World War II.

On board he kept a diary that served as a foundation for his work.

Once out of the Navy he illustrated children's books for Random House and Grosset & Dunlop.

During the early 1950s, Sam began illustrating for Classic Comic books. From there he picked up more publishing accounts: Chariton, Dell, DC Comics, Marvel and others.

Then in the 1960s and '70s Sam illustrated the long-running Outdoor Life feature, "This Happened to Me."

"I am not a cartoonist but rather a free lance illustrator," Glanzman said. "My art for the comic books is of an illustrative style not cartoons."

Glanzman and Podskoch met at the Delaware Academy Book and Media Fair in Delhi where Podskoch was teaching seventh grade reading: also, he was the organizer of the book fair.

Podskoch became fascinated with fire towers when he hiked to a tower on Hunter Mountain in the Catskill Mountains in 1987. This resulted in his first book, "Fire Towers of the Catskills: Their History and Lore" (2000), which contains stories and pictures of the men and women who were observers and the forest rangers who supervised the towers.

Then Marty turned to the Adirondacks for his next two books, "Adirondack Fire Towers: Their History and Lore," "The Southern Districts" (2003), and "Adirondack Fire Towers: Their History and Lore, The Northern Districts" (2005). The fire tower books were published by Purple Mountain Press.

The two have published their newspaper column, "Adirondack Stories," for five years. Books are available at book and gift stores or by contacting Podskoch at podskocht@comcast.net, (860) 267-2442 or www.adirondackstories.com.
