Considering a smoking ban for military is wrong on many levels

By Gretta Marino, Broadalbin-Perth High School
POSTED: July 26, 2009

Smoking bans in the military? So, what we're being told is that our troops can go fight and die for the United States, but they cannot have a cigarette?

Who can tell me what's wrong here?

Actually, smoking bans are generally unconstitutional. Within our Bill of Rights is a freedom of choice. Isn't smoking included in these rights? Besides, if members of our military want to just relax and have a cigarette, or a cigar, they should be allowed. It's their right as an citizen of the United States of America.

Why is the Pentagon considering this ban instead of dismissing it? Are medical issues among troops due to tobacco use too expensive for the government at this point in time?

Since when did money have anything to do with it?

The government can't invade on civilians' freedom of choice - or, at least they shouldn't be allowed to.

They shouldn't be allowed to invade on the same freedoms for our troops. If anything, soldiers are more deserving of that cigarette than anybody else in this country.

Feel free to disagree with me - it's your freedom of opinion.

Even if the ban is simply no smoking while in uniform, it still isn't right. If a soldier is overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan, obviously they will be in uniform as long as they are there, so they can't have a cigarette. Most soldiers use tobacco as an agent to calm or relax themselves. So, are these people saying that our troops aren't going to have anything to help them relax, at least a little?

What's wrong here?

These bans should not have even been proposed, let alone actually considered. It's just not right.

I know that there are people out there who agree with me.

It's not that I plan to smoke one day. It's just that bans on it in the military just don't click. Our troops would agree with me, regardless of whether they smoke.
