Hearing set Tuesday on Wal-Mart plan
By KAYLEIGH KARUTIS, The Leader-HeraldGLOVERSVILLE - City residents will have their first opportunity to comment on the site plan for the proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter at a Planning Board meeting Tuesday.
A public hearing on the site plan is to be conducted at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The board approved the project's final environmental impact statement at its September meeting. Residents will have several opportunities to comment on the site plan. Fulton County Senior Planner Sean Geraghty said the board probably will have two public hearings on the plan - one Tuesday and another in December.
A public hearing on a proposed parking lot for Rob and Crystal's All American Family Restaurant also will be conducted Tuesday.
The owners of the restaurant, Rob and Crystal St. Andrews, want to turn three vacant lots across from their East Fulton Street business into gravel lots where their patrons could park instead of the street.
Planning Board member Tim Mattice said at an October meeting he would like to see the couple use a type of gravel that would compact well to prevent loose stone from getting into the street.
The owners said they planned to use a sandstone-based gravel that would pack well. After about two years, once the ground is settled, the couple said, they plan to pave the land.
They also plan to erect fences at the end of the lot to prevent the lights from their customers' vehicles from disturbing the lot's neighbors.
Planning Board member Rick Bedell said he doubts the owners will have difficulty getting their project approved.
"I don't see how there would be a problem with it," he said.
Bedell said the board also will discuss the findings statement for the Wal-Mart final environmental impact statement, which acts as a summary of the document. He said he does not foresee any major issues coming up and has no big topics to bring up himself.
"We'll probably be discussing the findings statement and will probably vote on it," he said. "I'm good to go with it right now."

I have to laugh at the comment for Rob and Crystals..."They also plan to erect fences at the end of the lot to prevent the lights from their customers' vehicles from disturbing the lot's neighbors." If the people in that neighborhood got out of bed and got a job, they wouldn't have to worry about being disturbed by "headlights."

This hearing will be an irrevalant gathering of our elected officals since they do not have the requisite expertice, experience, or understanding of the issues at hand. Their only concern, with the exception of Renee Sanges is to get the tax money from the Town of Johnstown Wal-Mart to a Supercenter in the City of Gloversville, irregardless of the negative impacts associated with the proposed project. The City should deny the proposed plan until and unless the city hires a qualified individual or firm to review the proposal, instead of blindly rubber stamping the proposal since they don't know any better.

What's this?? People are STILL having input on the Wal-Mart Supercenter? It's a wonder Wal-Mart didn't pull out long ago.
