Corruption taints state

POSTED: November 3, 2009

New York state government not only has become too massive and expensive, it also has become a home for corruption.

In recent years, we've seen the resignation of a scandalous former Gov. Eliot Spitzer, who was involved with a prostitute; the jailing of Sen. Guy Velella, who was convicted of bribery conspiracy; the conviction of former state Comptroller Alan Hevesi, who used state workers to chauffeur his wife; and the conviction of former Health Commissioner Antonia Novello, who used state workers to help her with shopping and other personal business.

Now, former state Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno is on trial. Prosecutors accuse him of collecting $3.2 million in commissions and gifts in return for using his state influence to benefit labor unions and private businessmen.

These are only a few of the cases of alleged corruption. There may be many that never come to light.

State government's political structure invites misdeeds. One of the problems is the extreme power held by the governor, the Senate majority leader and the Assembly speaker. Those three negotiate much of the budget every year, rendering many rank-and-file legislators helpless. Members of the minority parties play an even smaller role in making public policy, resulting in a lack of oversight.

In addition, state legislators focus on securing member-item funding, known as "pork," to show their worth to voters. This fuels a "pay-to-play" culture in Albany.

Lawrence Norden, senior counsel at New York University Law School's Brennan Center of Justice, told The Associated Press, "What you've got is people see their jobs and keep their jobs by distributing pork. That's really what a lot of the work in the Legislature is."

Government reform is necessary, but courageous statesmen will have to step up to bring about change.

Over the past 50 years, New York State government has gone from the penthouse to the outhouse. The amount of corruption, the degree of incompetence, the self-serving brand of politics practiced which excludes any consideration for the constituent, and the self-protective sanctimony which the "lawmakers" normally cloak themselves in preclude their proper functioning within the legislature. New York State is the worst, with Illinois right up there beside it. The time is long overdue for the electorate to "fire" them all!

Remember that Hugh Farley was the number two man in the Senate until January. He's neck deep in it. Just because it's legal doesn't mean it isn't corrupt. He'd have us believe he had no part in the Senate leadership fiasco over the summer. I'm told he's a nice guy. I wouldn't mind if we stopped electing nice guys. If the guy running against him next year is foul-mouthed, socially awkward and has bad hygiene practices, yet manages to make sense and have a decent track record in life in general, I'm voting for him, whatever party he associates himself with. We just elected an independent mayor over the establishment candidate. We can do the same on the state level.

If they ban corrupted taint then where do we find it, the new Wal Mart Supercenter? Hopefully it is on sale. Knew a girl once that tainted my corrupt but that isn't relevant here though.

This is what I have been talking about! Time for tea? You bet! We need smaller government and a voice in what gets done. The time for all of this government waste to stop has come. NYS government has gotten so strong that no one has any voice in anything at all. The laws and waste are self perpetuating.

I would never vote for any politician who is clumsey enough to get caught. If they aren't skillful enough to hide their corruption, they don't get my vote.
