SOUTH GLENS FALLS - The Mayfield power game sputtered a little Thursday against fourth seeded Argyle.

However, the Lady Panthers did not panic, they just switched emphasis to their service game instead.

With Christie Showers (16 service points) and Dianna Hime (14 service points) leading the way, top-seeded Mayfield defeated Argyle 3-0 on game scores of 25-12, 26-24 and 25-19 to advance to Wednesday's Section II Class D volleyball championship match.

Mayfield will face second-seeded Lake George 11 a.m. Wednesday at Queensbury High School.

The Warriors earned their trip to the finals with a 3-2 victory over Hartford on scores of 23-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-21 and 25-23.

"We were a little disappointed in our power game and defense were a little off today," Mayfield coach Eileen Rovito said. "We still played a solid game and the girls stuck with it as a team and didn't get discouraged and that is what it is all about, even if our hits were a little off. But, our services were fantastic and I am happy our serves were on. That is what kept us in the game the whole time. And Argyle having trouble with their serves also kept us in the game."

Mayfield fell behind 12-9 in the opening game before Showers put one of her nine kills on the day on the floor to earn a side out and put the score at 12-10.

The junior then stepped back to the service line and ran off 15 straight points, including five aces, to help bring the Panthers back and pick up the opening game victory 25-12.

"I was just focusing on getting it in and getting ahead," Showers said.

The Lady Panthers again fell behind in the second game with the Scots opening a 14-10 advantage. Again, it was the service game that brought Mayfield back. Hime, Kacie Edwards and Kate Costello put together short runs, with Showers adding a pair of kills at the net to pull even at 18.

The lead see-sawed and was tied at 24 before a pair of Argyle mistakes gave Mayfield the game, 26-24.

Megan McWhorter staked the Scots to an early third-game lead with a four point run to open a 5-0 advantage.

Edwards broke the run the a strong cross-court hit and Hime served the Lady Panthers in front with a strong run for an 8-5 advantage.

The Scots rallied back to tie the game at 10 but could not put together sustained offensive runs to keep up with the Lady Panthers as they punched their ticket to the championship match with an Gabriella Brumaghim ace and a 25-19 victory.

"I think lately our offense has gone a little off, but our serves have gotten better," Showers said. "Service is a very important part of the game. We played a good game . . . we could have played better, but we played good. We played a good game . . . we could have played better, but we played good. We are really excited about getting a chance to go back to the championship."

Showers finished with 16 service points, six aces and nine kills, while Hime had six aces and 14 service points. Edwards finished with seven kills, three blocks and five service points and Cassi Brancato recorded five kills, a block and nine assists. Whitney Ostrander contributed five kills and a block to the victory.

Argyle was led by Shelby Graham's five kills and two blocks, while Sarah Bonhotee had five kills and five assists. Amber Marshall had 19 digs and Ashley Ellis contributed three kills and two aces.

"I knew that the top four seeds [Mayfield, Lake George, Hartford and Argyle] were all strong but I am happily surprised we have had two 3-0 wins," Rovito said. "I am thinking we will be OK [with the five day break]. It gives us a chance to rest and work on some of the stuff that we need to refocus on."

Class A

Burnt Hills 3, Amsterdam 0

SARATOGA - Top-seeded Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake advanced to the Class A championship match with a sweep of Amsterdam on scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-10.

The Spartans will play for their eighth-straight Section II championship against Foothills Council champion Queensbury at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Lake George High School.
