District to allow soccer team to practice Sunday

By MICHAEL ANICH, The Leader-Herald
POSTED: November 7, 2009

JOHNSTOWN - The Greater Johnstown School District this weekend is breaking its longstanding policy not to allow sports teams to practice on Sundays, with limited circumstances for the Johnstown High School varsity soccer team.

District officials informed the Board of Education on Thursday night at JHS that Athletic Director James Robare brought up the issue of possibly letting there be practice on Sunday.

The boys varsity soccer team will play a Section II Class B championship game versus Broadalbin-Perth High School at 7 p.m. Monday in Colonie.

Board member Leslie Buggeln-Bosworth, chairwoman of the board's Academic-Extra-Curricular Committee, said Robare said Sunday practice wouldn't be for all teams and only for varsity teams. He also indicated the practice would be no more than one hour, 20 minutes in length and not involve drills, she said.

Buggeln-Bosworth said the practices could be held for teams that have games on Monday and don't necessarily have to be mandatory. She said the soccer team wants to know if it can practice Sunday.

Superintendent Katherine Sullivan asked if the district would have to amend its current policy of not allowing sports teams to practice on Sundays.

Board President Robert Curtis said the board could approve a motion to allow the JHS boys varsity soccer team to practice Sunday for one time only.

"This is the first opportunity they've had to go for a sectional title," Curtis said.

The superintendent made the recommendation to allow the varsity soccer team to practice Sunday for 80 minutes and the motion passed 7-1, with only board member Russell Martin objecting.

"This is a great opportunity for them, and I wish them a lot of luck," Curtis said.

In another sports-related item, JHS alpine ski coach Jeff Krempa asked what was going on with a potential for merger with the Gloversville High School ski team.

Sullivan said there are two Gloversville skiers interested in the move because that district has cut its ski program.

"We are looking into it further," Sullivan said, noting a merger has to be sanctioned by Section II.

Krempa told school officials practice starts Monday, and he needs a decision soon.

Some of you people make me laugh. It is a one time deal. You have a team playing for a sectional championship and you have people in Johnstown complaining about ONE practice on a Sunday. The attitude in Gloversville is if your playing for a championship, what can we do to help. You need to practice on Sunday, there are no questions asked!! For some of you who do not know this, sports teams cannot practice 7 days a week, so if they practice Sunday than they must have Saturday off. Make that your family day!!

im pretty sure they do...

when i was in high school at jhs we had "practice" on sundays...it was optional but everyone went...and the coach would tell the captain what to do/work on. we would do it. then he would come back after we were done. ask how it was and we would play two hand touch football or a game of frizbee. it wasn't considered a practice because it was optional and the coach was never there for it.

John Sirtoli writes with the most kindest of hearts. Although I do not support his views, he never has been vengeful.

Wait 'till John Sirtoli hears this! He'll be gettin' some obscure Bible quotes together to mis-interpret into some kind of vengeance to come unto the GJSD! Don't forget the kids here....just think, in 50 years, they can write letters to the editor about the glory days of their 2009 sectional season and call for the head of the 2059 soccer coach! In closing....

DIYMATT, Are you kidding me! These kids are playing for a title. How often does that happen. One Sunday for 80 minutes isn't nothing. If I was a parent of any of these kids I would be proud, excited and 100 percent behind them.In fact, if you want it to be a family day then the parents could go to the field and watch their kids practice. You would be surprised on what one more practice can do for a team.Win or lose I think its awesome that they got this far.Quit being so negative.

It is fine if it is a one-time occurrence for a special circumstance like this, but to offer practices on Sunday is a mistake. Kids need one day of peace. Many people are involved in other types of club sports that occur on Sundays and the school district should not change the rule. Do they allow practices in Gloversville on Sundays? Is that where that idea came from?

The coaches must be in panic mode. Where is an angry mob of Baptists when you need one?

Bad move, even though this is a one time only exemption. Sundays should really be for families. Besides that, why can't they practice Saturday instead of Sunday. And finally, one more practice this late in the season isn't going to help the players.

We are looking further into it equates to it does not apply to one of my children therefore it is on the back burner.
