SARATOGA SPRINGS - It was a big day for the Broadalbin-Perth and Fonda-Fultonville boys cross country teams Friday.

Both the Patriots and the Braves will send their full teams to next Saturday's state championships in Plattsburgh after winning Section II titles at Saratoga Spa State Park.

"I'm very proud of what the boys team did," Broadalbin-Perth coach Jeff Richards said. "As tight as we've run together all year, it's just amazing. This is probably the best team I've ever coached. Their depth is amazing."

The Patriots won their second straight Section II Class B title, while Fonda-Fultonvile won its first sectional crown since 2005.

"Before the race, we discussed where the boys needed to be at certain points of the race," Fonda-Fultonville coach Mark Therrien said. "They were right where they needed to be the whole race."

Class B

As it has all season long, the B-P boys used tight grouping to earn the Class B title.

The Patriots placed five runners in the top 14 to win the team title by a 50-111 margin over Lansingburgh.

The B-P win was somewhat tempered later in the day when the girls team failed in its bid for a third straight sectional crown.

"It's exciting in a way and disappointing in a way," Richards said. "Our goal always is to bring both teams as one to states."

Canajoharie-Fort Plain was 13th in the team standings with 337 points and Johnstown was 14th with 373 points.

"This was the first year in a while that we fielded full boys and girls teams," Johnstown coach John Valovic said. "We're not only on the way back, but we're thinking about next year and looking ahead to a brighter future."

Cobleskill-Richmondville's David Richards won the individual title with a time of 15:33.02.

B-P was led by Justin Ferguson, who placed fifth with a time of 16:09.86, while Adam Rasefske who placed sixth with a time of 16:13.85.

James Vainauskas (12th, 16:25.98), Andrew Bogdan (13th, 16:45.09) and Austin Becker (14th, 16:46.21) also posted top-15 showings for B-P.

Trever McConnell (21st, 17:12.50), Austin Reakes (25th, 17:16.50), Nate Brown (39th, 17:47.68), Patrick Brown (49th, 18:08.21) and Cameron Anastasia (73rd, 18:56.28) also competed for the Patriots.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain was led by Terence Petty, who placed 29th with a time of 17:24.77.

Dylan Countryman (72nd, 18:55.96), Luke DeBoer (81st, 19:18.26), Kevin Jackson (98th, 19:55.81), John Adams (99th, 19:58.11), Avery Johnson (113th, 21:02.58), Shaun Mandl (116th, 21:37.83), Chris Hanifin (119th, 22:20.34), Joe Lindell (121st, 22:34.40) and Bill Mulder (131st, 24:05.07)

Anthony McCarthy paced Johnstown with a 34th-place finish, covering the 3.1-mile course in a time of 17:37.63.

Daeshan Buseck (18:22.38) was 58th for the Sir Bills, Mark Horning (20:38.31) was 108th, Kyle Pollak (20:54.66) was 11th, Brendan Hayner (22:35.60) was 122nd and Alex Kuban (25:12.57) was 132nd.

"On the boys side, they competed. We had a couple kids run their fastest time of the year," Valovic said. "They all came together at the right time. I'm proud of them."

Class C

One point was the margin that earned Fonda-Fultonville its sectional title.

The Braves edged Voorheesville, 44-45, by placing five runners in the top 13.

"I was worried that after the season we've had that it might not go our way today," Therrien said. "We didn't want to come away without a sectional title after the season we've had. We won it by a point, so it will count."

Voorheesville's Conor Cashin won the individual title with a time of 15:48.44. Fonda-Fultonville's Zak Godfrey was second with a time of 16:26.58.

"We knew Voorheesville would be our competition," Therrien said. "The last couple of weeks they've been coming on strong. We knew we had to step it up."

Fonda-Fultonville's Michael Scott was eighth with a time of 16:56.23 and Cody Shave was ninth with a time of 16:57.51. Both held off Voorheesville's Joe Becker who placed 10th with a time of 16:59.55.

"Cody [Shave] dug deep and got back by the Voorheesville kid," Therrien said. "Mike Scott and Cody keeping him behind them was where the race was going to be won or lost."

Matt Hoffman (17:11.34) was 12th for FFCS, Ian Chapin (17:18.08) was 13th, Cody Russell (17:25.12) was 15th and Kyle Geniti (17:50.93) was 19th as the Braves placed seven runners in the top 20.

"We've had awesome grouping this season," Therrien said. "We've got a good group of young kids coming through."

Mike Guiffre (21st, 18:04.82) was 21st, Tyler Angioli (33rd, 18:39.89) and Ryan Weitz (40th, 19:01.52) also competed for FFCS.
