SARATOGA SPRINGS - After winning the Section II Class B title in 2007 and 2008, the Broadalbin-Perth girls cross country team looked to make it three straight Friday at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Instead, the Lady Patriots finished second behind Foothills Council rival Scotia-Glenville by a 42-71 margin.

"A lot of teams would be happy with second," Broadalbin-Perth coach Jeff Richards said. "It's not what we were hoping for, but it wasn't for a lack of effort."

Glens Falls (81 points) was third, Cobleskill-Richmondville (108) was fourth and Lansingburgh (132) completed the top five. Canajoharie-Fort Plain (321) was 11th and Johnstown (327) was 13th.

Broadalbin-Perth's Opal Jessica Bogdan earned a trip to the state meet, placing second with a time of 19:02.82.

Scotia-Glenville Becky Celorio won the Class B individual title, covering the 3.1-mile course in a time of 18:41.20.

Broadalbin-Perth's Mackenzie Ottati (11th, 19:51.47), Emily Baker (14th, 20:02.87) was 14th and Sarah DePalma (20th, 20:38.20) all posted top-20 showings.

Nicole Vainauskas (24th, 20:49.76), Morganne Ottati (57th, 22:25.63), Alesia Bousa (61st, 22:29.39), Anna McConnell (62nd, 22:29.65), Ali List (69th, 22:47.89) and Lindsey LaPort (104th, 27:49.18) also competed for the Lady Patriots.

"They're young and they've got great junior and senior seasons to look forward to," Richards said. "Hopefully, this will make our girls hungrier for next year," Richards said.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain was led by Cora Soodsma who placed 26th with a time of 20:55.49.

Jessica Hojohn (73rd, 22:54.18), Melody Mead (79th, 23:13.95), Brittney Clay (85th, 24:04.41), Stephanie Terwilliger (95th, 25:12.80), Jennie Trahan (103rd, 26:42.92) and Cecelia Hill (10th, 28:26.70) also competed for C-FP.

Emily Fettinger paced Johnstown with a 52nd-place finish in a time of 22:14.13.

Katrayla Blair (22:45.22) was 66th for the Lady Bills, Quincey Brabant (23:09.07) was 78th, Lauren Mosher (23:25.66) was 80th and Mikayla Rubscha (24:18.73) was 87th.

"We were close to being in the top 10 on the girls side and that was our goal," Valovic said. "They all came together at the right time. I'm proud of them."

Class C

In addition to its boys team, FFCS will send two members of its girls team to the state meet.

Eighth-graders Kim Geniti and Samantha Phelps each earned a trip to the state championship meet in Plattsburgh by placing among the top four.

"This is Sam's first year on varsity, so going to states is a big bonus for her," Fonda-Fultonville coach Mark Therrien said. "Kim was one spot away from states last year," Therrien said. "It's good to see her get there this time."

Geniti was second with a time of 19:21.68, while Phelps fourth with a time of 19:50.46.

"We knew Sam and Kim had a chance to go to states at least on paper," Therrien said. "I'm happy both of them were able to make it."

Voorheesville won the team title with 42 points, while Schuylerville was second with 90 points. Fonda-Fultonville was fourth with 113 points.

Schuylerville's Samantha Watson won the individual title with a time of 18:50.50.
