Schlesier, Quant earn state meet spots

BENSON - For the second straight year, Johnstown's Brett Schlesier qualified for the state championships at the Section II Nordic Skiing Championships.
Schlesier finished eighth with a time of 29:12 on the 10k course at Lapland Lake Nordic Vacation Center.
Also reaching the state meet was Mayfield's Nikki Quant, who finished the 7.5k course in a time of 28:22 to earn the 12th and final spot. Mayfield's Lidija Nikollaj earned the girls alternate spot, placing 13th with a time of 28:25.
Queensbury swept the boys and girls team titles. The Spartans' boys team finished with 13 points to easily outdistance runner-up Scotia-Glenville, which finished with 65. Lake George (67 points), Guilderland (72) and Johnsburg (115) completed the top five. Johnstown (117) was sixth, Mayfield (134) was eighth and Canajoharie (172) was ninth.
The Queensbury girls also bested Scotia-Glenville to win the team title, prevailing by a 14-54 margin. Guilderland (84) was third, Mayfield (92) was fourth and Lake George (95) was fifth. Johnstown (149) finished ninth and Canajoharie (243) was 11th.
Lake George's Steve Petramale and Queensbury's Will Frielinghaus shared the boys individual title, finishing with identical times of 26:27. Queensbury swept the next three spots as Aaron Newell (26;41) was third, Nick Underwood (27:58) was fourth and Mike Mulshine (28:19) was fifth. Rounding out the top 12 and also making the state team were Lake George's Willie Underwood (sixth, 28:26), Queensbury's Jon Flint (seventh, 29:04), Guilderland's Andrew Klug (ninth, 29;25), Queensbury's Taylor Perry (10th, 29:35), Saratoga Springs' Brian Halligan (11th, 29:39) and Shenendehowa's Austin Huneck (12th, 29:52). Scotia-Glenville's Avery Francois earned the boys alternate spot, placing 13th with a time of 30:21.
Two other local skiers posted top-20 finishes as Canajoharie's Taylor Macci (31:01) was 15th and Mayfield's Tom McClellan (31:43) was 18th.
Mayfield's Dave Krutz (32:00) was 23rd, Johnstown's Evan Swedick (32:04) was 25th, Mayfield's Jamie McNamara (33;44) was 35th, Johnstown's Jared Brower (35:12) was 41st, Johnstown's Kyle Pollak (35:31) was 42nd, Canajoharie's Josh Crouse (36:19) was 47th, Johnstown's Connor Smullens (36:21) was 48th and Canajoharie's Max Prime (36:23) was 49th. Rounding out the local finishers were Johnstown's Mertcan Dogan (53rd, 37:02), Johnstown's Andy Liccardi (57th, 40:32), Mayfield's Matt Montgomery (58th, 40:40), Mayfield's Lance Frasier (59th, 41:01), Mayfield's Josh Himpsl (60th, 46:42), Canajoharie's Nate Brody (61st, 47:35) and Mayfield's Aaron Costa (63rd, 1:23.00).
Queensbury's Carly Wynn earned her third straight Section II title in the 7.5k girls race, covering the course in 23:51 to win by a 1;21 margin over teammate Danielle Winslow. Glens Falls' Kate Mulcahy (26:02) was third, Queensbury's Brittany Winslow (26:11) was fourth and Lake George's Emma Underwood (26:37) and Johnsburg's Emily Burns (26:37) tied for fifth. Rounding out the top 12 and qualifying for the state meet were Queensbury's Morgan Mueller (seventh, 26:45), Scotia-Glenville's Ashley Forshey (eighth, 26:47), Scotia-Glenville's Katie Zeppetelli (ninth, 27:31), Queensbury's Gabby Lebihan (10th, 27:32) and Queensbury's Abby Hellman (11th, 27:42).
Several area girls posted to-50 finishes as Johnstown's Ashley English (32:05) was 31st, Mayfield's Sarah Montgomery (32:07) was 32nd, Mayfield's Jessica Glode (32:46) was 35th, Johnstown's Abigail Heroth (32:54) was 36th, Johnstown's Courtney Javarone (33:18) was 39th, Johnstown's Alyssa Brand (34:02) was 43rd and Johnstown's Katherine Bant (34:40) was 45th. Rounding out the local finishers were Johnstown's Libby Havlicek (51st, 35:49), Johnstown's Amanda Cline (56th, 37:59), Canajoharie's Jenny Trahan (58th, 39:09), Canajoharie's Catie Corrigan (59th, 39:53), Canajoharie's Rosemary Trahan (62nd, 47:54) and Canajoharie's Emily Brown (64th, 1:36.15).
The state championships are scheduled for Feb. 23 and 24 at Bristol Mountain in Canandaigua.
