Jerry and Phyllis Van Alstyne of Gloversville recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at a surprise celebration at the couple's home. There were approximately 60 family members and friends who gathered to honor the couple. Those who attended listened to 1960s music, viewed a slideshow of the couple's life and reminisced about the past 50 years.
The couple married on Jan. 20, 1962, at the Emmanuel Baptist Church. The candlelight ceremony was performed by the Rev. Winston Maricle, pastor. The attendants were Shirley Oathout (Gray), maid of honor; Kathy Oathout (Lamantia) and Barbara Cook (Wilson), bridesmaids; Kathleen Meyers (Baird), flower girl; Ronald Strauser, best man; Larry Howland (deceased) and Russell Van Alstyne, ushers; Donald Dwyer, junior usher; and Richard Payne, ringbearer.
They have five children, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren (with a fourth expected in July). Both Jerry and Phyllis Van Alstyne are retired and enjoy spending time with their family, hiking and camping.
