Cody Bleau ran consistent enough at Fonda Speedway to place fourth in the 602 Sportsman division standings without the benefit of a feature win.
Bleau is approaching the 2012 season at Fonda with a new team and a new outlook as he joins the Rockefeller racing team.
"This is Dave and Jeff Rockefeller's car," Bleau said. "They gave me the chance to race it this year and I am really looking forward to it. It is a great opportunity for me to go after the championship."
Bleau, also known as "The Milkman" will be in the cockpit of the 816R, while Jeff will wheel the No. 816. Both drivers will compete in the 602 limited sportsman division.
"The 73B is still at the house, but Dave and Jeff gave me the chance to race their car at Fonda," Bleau said. "They helped me some last year and I also ran their car at Glen Ridge a couple of times last year. We also are helping Jeff out at the same time because he is going to race Fonda and Glen Ridge, but we are concentrating on Fonda. It is a great team put together like this. They have given us an absolutely great car. With my experience racing sportsman and with their experience it should make a great combination. Dave and Jeff and their team are a great group to hang around with."
The cars will carry sponsorship DR and Son Lawn Care and Snowplowing, Schenectady Auto Sales, Elmo's Auto Body, Andy's Speed Shop, Stephens' General Contracting, Right Way Driving Center, Allura Solar, Steven R. Jones CPA and Island Mist Tanning
61st season opener
Fonda Speedway will open for its 61st consecutive season of racing Saturday with the annual Ice Jam, a 40-lap, $4,000-to-win main event for modifieds.
In recent years the event has been considered the starting point for the big block modifieds in the Northeast. However, this year there is a conflict as several of the larger traveling teams will have to choose where they want to open their season.
The Super DIRTcar Series will open its campaign Saturday with the Jan Corcoran Memorial, a $6,000-to-win, 64-lap event at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.
On the racing card that day, along with the modifieds, will be a Dash for Cash for the 602 Sportsman division along with warm-ups for all divisions.
As Bobby Varin did in 2010, Ronnie Johnson kicked off his drive to the 2011 track championship with a victory in the season-opening event.
Pit gates will open at 1 p.m. with front gates opening at 2 p.m. Racing is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
Also on Saturday, Fonda Futures Kid's Club will host an Easter Egg Hunt for children 12 years of age and under with prizes given out for the contest.
There has been a change in the Fonda Speedway schedule that was released at March's car show.
The track had originally schedule a regular show or rain date for the BBL Championship Night of Double Features on Aug. 25. That date has been removed from the schedule because it is too close to the time allowed to set up for the annual Fonda Fair.
Opening Night at The Ridge
After a shakedown for both the race teams and the race track last Saturday, The Ridge - the new name for Glen Ridge Motorsports Park - will get down to the business of racing Friday night with its season opener.
The NAPA of Johnstown and Gloversville-sponsored night will feature a regular weekly race card of modifieds, sportsman, rookie sportsman, street stocks and four cylinders. The green flag is set to drop on the night's racing at 7:30 p.m.
The Ridge also welcomes Mark Krosky as the track's race director and Pat DaBiere as the new pit steward.
Krosky takes over for Mike Romano, who will concentrate on promoting the track with co-promoter Jake Spraker. DaBiere takes over for A.J. Romano who will spend his Friday nights as crew chief for his son Adam as he begins his racing career racing go-karts at Caroga Creek Raceway.
Varin wins at Black Rock
After picking up a pair of victories on the Capital Region Sprint Car Agency RaceSaver series in 2011, Danny Varin started the 2012 season on the right foot.
Varin, who picked up his first sprint car win last year at Fonda Speedway, dominated the 20-lap A-main, leading from green to checkers.
The CRSA will run at Fonda Speedway on April 21 and The Ridge on Aug. 17.
