Elsie S. Unger, 80, of Gloversville, N.Y., died October 16, 2012. She was born in Gloversville, the daughter of the late Willard and Etta Ortell Smith. On July 19, 1958, she married Robert G. Unger, who survives.
Mrs. Unger was a 1950 graduate of Gloversville High School and received a B.A. Degree from Elmira College in 1954. She had been a secretary at the Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Schenectady, the former Mohawk Cabinet Company of Gloversville, the first legal secretary at the former General Telephone Company, and later a part-time position with Gloversville Housing Authority, retiring in 1999. She was also employed at the time at Hollenbeck Funeral Home.
She was appointed to the Board of Commissioners of the Gloversville Housing Authority in 1999. In 2002, she was elected as the first woman chairperson of the Board and was still serving on the Board at the time of her death. She was a member of the North Main Street United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Ellen (Roger) Bergman of Northville; a son, Karl (Sara) Unger of Westfield, Mass.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her. She was predeceased by her sister, Lucy Trombley; and her brother, Arnold J. Smith, both of Gloversville.
In keeping with Elsie's wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown.
