JOHNSTOWN-The Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Board of Cooperative Educational Services recently terminated an auto mechanic because he did not qualify under the civil-service rules to be a mechanic.

"It wasn't over a lack of ability - he simply didn't have his high school diploma," said BOCES Superintendent Patrick Michel.

He said the mechanic was already working in Johnstown when BOCES took over management of the combined Gloversville and Johnstown transportation services, and BOCES?didn't immediately check out his background. Michel said BOCES was notified by civil service of the employee's not being qualified and followed the rules, removing him from the position.

"He was an excellent mechanic, but we will work now look to find a new mechanic to make sure that we comply," said Michel.

He said BOCES posted the position last week and hopes to fill the job within the next two to three weeks.
