Mrs. Joan M. Burgess, 82, of Gloversville, passed away at her residence November 11, 2012. She was born April 18, 1930, in W. Winfield, N.Y., daughter of the late Myles and Mary Starr Rice. Mrs. Burgess was educated at the former St. Francis de Sales school in Gloversville, and worked at area glove companies as a finger knitter. She and her husband traveled extensively during the mid-1980s in their mobile home.
Joan owned and operated the Trolley Line Diner in Johnstown for several years. She enjoyed casino visits, bingo and loved her dogs. She was a devoted mother and will be sadly missed.
Her family would like to thank all family and friends for the loving care given to Joan.
Survivors include her children, James Warner Sr. (Barbara), Leonard R. Burgess Jr. (Linda), Janet Steenburg and her companion, Dutch, and Patricia Rowback (Alfred Sr.), all of Gloversville. She is also survived by a stepson, Terry B. Burgess Sr. of Gloversville; and a stepdaughter, Sandra Gates of Broadalbin. Joan leaves thirty grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. On May 13, 2002, she was predeceased by her husband, Leonard R. Burgess Sr., whom she married March 17, 1956.
Joan was also predeceased by her sisters, Mary Myers, Shirley Clifford and Betty Ackernecht; and a brother Thomas Rice Sr.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville. Those who wish may make contributions to Joan's family to assist with expenses.
