James A. Dean, 91, a resident of Foxhill Road, Edinburg, died November 13, 2012, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 9, 1921, the son of the late Harold and Elizabeth Murray Dean. He graduated from Mepham High School in Long Island, N.Y. James was a decorated United States Navy veteran surviving a Kamikaze sinking of his ship, the USS Aaron Ward in 1944. He retired in 1974 from Picone Brothers in Farmingdale, Long Island, and was a member of the Teamsters Union.
Jim was a resident of Edinburg, N.Y., since 1974. He worked for Brownell Lumber. He also served on the Edinburg Board of Education and was an active member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Northville.
He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor; his son, Michael; his second wife, Charlotte Coyle Dean; his brother, Harold; and sisters, Jenny, Grace and Anna.
Survivors include his children, Pam La Mattina (John) of Willington, Conn., Judy Barrett (Charles) of Westin, W.Va., and James H. Dean (Jane) of Grenich, Conn.; stepchildren, Kathleen Maher (Marty) of Chittenden, Vt., Mary Ann Bausewein (Joel) of Hope, Charlotte "Sha" Bulka (Peter) of Northville, Margaret Breen (Daniel) of Greenfield, Elizabeth Chayer (Steven) of Seattle, Wash., and Thomas Coyle (Debra) of Buckley, Wash.; 33 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call on Friday, November 16, 2012, from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Northville Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday following the calling hours at 11 a.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church of Northville.
