Maintain Medicare

November 19, 2012
The Leader Herald

When Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney reminded Americans that President Barack Obama's health care law will slash $716 billion in funding for the Medicare program, Democrats called Romney a liar.

But it was true. And now, an influential liberal think-tank is urging Congress to cut another $385 billion in health care spending - most of it from Medicare.

The plan comes from the liberal Center for American Progress. CAP President Neera Tanden formerly worked in the White House, where she was one of the architects of "Obamacare." Perhaps that is why that massive program and the federal-state Medicaid system were not targeted by the CAP for cuts to help lessen the U.S. spending deficit.

Instead, the group wants to reduce a program on which millions of older Americans rely. The CAP insists the only Medicare cuts would be in reimbursements to health care providers.

Give us a break. That would lessen the quality of care for senior citizens.

The CAP plan also calls for very real cuts in funding for Medicare beneficiaries, too.

Lawmakers, both Democrats and Republicans, shouldn't allow it.
