Russell V. Pollard, of Pennsylvania Avenue, Johnstown, passed away at his home on Wednesday, November 21, 2012.
He was born in Norfolk, Virginia on June 11, 1924, a son of the late Lt. Russell V. and Helen Pollard.
He graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia in 1943. He then served three years in the U.S. Army. Russ then graduated from William and Mary with an AA degree and entered Springfield College, where he graduated Cum Laude with a BS degree in science and received his MA from Springfield in 1951. He then went on to earn two Masters, one at the University of North Dakota and the other from Union College.
He taught in Odessa, New York and moved to Johnstown where he taught science at Knox Junior High School for over 30 years. While teaching at Knox, he was awarded three National Science Foundation Grants.
Mr. Pollard retired from teaching in 1981 and served as a Fulton County Supervisor for twelve years, two as Chairman of the Board.
Russ was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, serving as a Vestryman and also led the Church Boy Scout Troop. He was a swim coach for the Y.M.C.A. swim team, served on the board of MVED for several years, and was an avid license plate collector and a member of ALPCA.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Alice Mazuzan Pollard, whom he married on June 14, 1947; three children, Russ (Sue) Pollard of Cincinnati, Robert (Sue) Pollard of Ogunquit, Maine, Eleanor (Mark) Jordan of Argentina; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation for friends and family will be held on Saturday, November 24, 2012, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 North Melcher Street, Johnstown.
