Ida Ballew, 95, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 8, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, N.Y., with her loving family by her side.
She was born in French Creek, N.Y., March 27, 1917, the daughter of Arlie Coe Shampoe and Frank Shampoe, and she was the last living member of nine brothers and sisters. Her first husband, Lawrence Redding died in 1963 and she remarried in 1976 to Charles Ballew, who predeceased her in 1992.
Her long life included many jobs such as egg candling, picking fruit, working in a canning factory, and cleaning banks and homes. Lastly she worked and retired from Electric Materials in Northeast, Pa. She and her husband enjoyed many years of travel, camping with a group, and a winter residence in Florida that included a fall and winter of fun and friendship.
She resided many years in Cutting, N.Y., and from there she and Lawrence moved to Harborcreek, Pa., eventually settled in Northeast, Pa. She always was an active participant in her churches. In 2002, her health and age encouraged her to move closer to family and she moved to Trackside Homes in Johnstown, N.Y., until January 2012, when Pineview Commons Assisted Living became her home.
Ida was well known wherever she went for her wonderful lemon meringue pies. Her pies were her calling cards. She always was a willing volunteer at church, coffee hours, and covered-dish suppers with her baked goodies. She will be sadly missed for these and her ever-present smile and a good word to anyone who would listen.
She is survived by her two daughters, Marlene Redding Camper and Linda Redding Litz and sons-in-laws, Donald Camper and Robert Litz; grandchildren, Michelle Camper Burch, Robert A. Litz (Margaret), Kathy Litz Keating, William Litz (Lisa), Kerrie Litz Carey (David), Anita Litz Korff (Daniel) Franz Litz (Laura) Danielle Litz Antifaiff (Todd) and Hanz Litz; great-grandchildren, Christina Litz Hayes (Ryan) and Melinda Litz, Jillian and Jack Keating, E.J. Litz (Amber), Nicole and Abbie Carey, Daniel and Luke Korff, Mackenzie and Skyler Litz and Gage and Nathaniel Antifaiff; great-great-grandchildren, Trevor and Zachary Litz and Zoey Hayes.
A memorial service will be held in Ida's honor on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at the Johnstown Nazarene Church, where Ida was a member, Route 29, Johnstown, N.Y. at 2:30 p.m., with a reception in the church hall following. Burial will be at a later date in Pennsylvania.
