Joseph B. Collins, 78, of Midline Road, Amsterdam, passed away Saturday at his home.
Born in Amsterdam on December 25, 1934, the son of the late John F. and Clara Stowell Collins. Educated locally, he lived here his entire life. He was employed by Fownes Bros. and later St. Mary's Cemetery. Joe retired from GTE phone company, later Verizon, and then worked for a time at Mohawk Finishing. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing, puzzles and casinos. He was truly a family man, who loved woodworking, often making cabinets and crafts for his family to enjoy. He was a diehard Yankees, John Wayne and Elvis fan. A beloved husband, he married the former Elizabeth H. Ferguson on Feb. 10, 1959; she survives as well as his dear children Joseph (Sue) Collins of Amsterdam, Linda (Bob) Wood of Broadalbin, Deborah (Ron) Banach of Broadalbin, Mary Beth (Dean) Uebrick of Middle Grove, and Ryan Collins of Oconomowoc, WI; his cherished grandchildren Tina Collins Glass, Anthony Collins, Amanda Hayes, Kayla Uebrick, April Banach, Tyler Wood, Kevin Uebrick and Kaitlin Wood; the great-grandchildren who brought joy to him are Derek, Brianna, Jazmine, Sophia, Madalyn and Serena; he also leaves his brother Elton (Stella) Collins of Amsterdam and a sister Marilyn Bell of Amsterdam; his cat Taz, and dog Cinnamon as well as nieces and nephews. Brothers Charles and John Collins, sisters Elizabeth Collins,Eileen O'Brien, Catherine Liszewski and Ruth Handy have all predeceased him.
A service to celebrate his life will take place Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue. Cremation will follow in Vale Crematory. A calling hour will begin Wednesday at noon prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital in care of the funeral home office.
