Nation cannot let gov’t disarm citizens

January 18, 2013
The Leader Herald

I have been a responsible gun owner for more than 45 years. My guns are used for deer hunting and home defense. I hunt with a scope-sighted, Ruger .243-caliber bolt-action rifle. It has a top- loading built-in five-round magazine "clip." It has to be cocked each time to fire a round and cannot be altered to accept more than five rounds.

My home-defense weapon is a Remington five-shot 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun with a built-in tabular magazine, which also cannot be altered to accept more than five rounds. I have absolutely no use for an assault weapon with an extended clip or a semiautomatic handgun with an extended clip. I'm only speaking for myself.

I keep my guns locked up. But when I'm home, the shotgun is out, locked, loaded and within easy reach. Last year, I called the police due to a BB-gun incident in my neighborhood, and it took the police about 35 minutes to arrive. I place no blame on the police; we have a very good and dedicated police force. But they are undermanned and very busy doing a job with limited manpower. We need to be armed.

Let's say I'm home and it's late at night and someone decides to break in and illegally enter my home to commit robbery or do something worse. They will be met with deadly force. Then I will call 911 to come and sort things out and clean up the mess.

My theory on that is simple: I would rather be tried by 12 than be carried by six. That right was given to all of us by our forefathers who had the vision to create the Second Amendment.

We as a nation cannot allow the government to disarm us. We saw it in Nazi Germany, Russia, Cuba, North Korea and other nations. When you take away the people's means to resist, then you can totally suppress the people.

I will end with a quote by Will Durant: "A great civilization cannot be conquered from without until it has been destroyed from within."
