ALBANY -University at Albany head coach Jon Mueller has announced the appointment of D.J. Hoagboon, Josh Nethaway, Greg Muller, and Jeff Welsh as team captains for the 2013 baseball season.
Hoagboon, a junior from Mayfield, is the Great Danes' top returning hitter, batting a team-best .318 in 2012. The second team all-America East outfielder recorded a .398 on-base percentage and .411 slugging percentage, including seven doubles, two triples, and a home run.
Nethaway, a redshirt junior, finished second on the squad a year ago with a .313 batting average. The Fonda native also was a second team all-conference selection and All-Academic honoree, logging 12 doubles, a triple and two home runs, while scoring 27 runs and driving in 30. Splitting starts between first base and the outfield, Nethaway boasted a .993 fielding percentage with 275 putouts and 23 assists.
With the leadership of the 2013 co-captains, the Great Danes look to build upon their 2012 campaign that featured the highest total league wins in the program's Division I history. Finishing with a 22-32-1 overall record, UAlbany boasted a 16-8 conference record and earned the No. 2 seed in the America East championship.
In addition, seven players earned all-conference honors and left-handed pitcher Sean Lucas was chosen in the 25th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Cincinnati Reds, marking the highest draft choice from the UAlbany program since 2002.
With a 54-game slate, UAlbany will play its first 18 contests on the road, kicking off the season Feb. 15 to 17 in Cary, N.C. at Wright State's USA Baseball Complex Classic. The Great Danes will play single games against Canisius, last year's MAAC runner-up, Mid-American Conference's Toledo, Wright State of the Horizon League, and 2012 CAA runner-up Delaware.
UAlbany's home-opener is March 19 against Marist.
