BROADALBIN - When the opportunity was there, the Queensbury Lady Spartans seized it.

Holding a 1-0 advantage early in Monday's Foothills Council softball game, Queensbury turned four hits into a six-run inning to defeat host Broadalbin-Perth 7-0 at Broadalbin-Perth High School.

"We can't give good teams like Queensbury extra outs," Broadalbin-Perth coach Harrie Washburn said. "We didn't make errors, but we make a couple of those close plays and we are out of the inning."

Queensbury (2-1 overall, 1-1 Foothills) picked up a run in the first inning when Katelyn Shevlin led off the game with a walk, stole second and moved to third on Alyssa Sparacia's ground out. Lindsey Ziegler picked up the RBI with her ground out to the right side for a quick 1-0 lead.

Broadalbin-Perth (2-2 overall, 2-1 Foothills) looked to answer the run in the bottom of the first.

Caitlin Rasefke legged out a bunt single but was stranded at first as starting pitcher Amy Zuccaro struck out two of the next three Lady Patriots to shut down the threat.

Queensbury broke the game open in the top of the third, connecting for four hits as the Lady Spartans batted around in the inning.

Rachel Molloy led off with a single and Shevlin was hit by a pitch. The Lady Spartans pulled off a double steal before Molloy scored on a wild pitch. Ziegler delivered Shevlin to the plate with her RBI single. Ziegler stole second and was joined on the bases by Catherine Hand, who drew a walk. Zuccaro helped her cause with an RBI single.

Hand and Zuccaro scored on Brooke Meader's two RBI double to give the Lady Spartans a solid 7-0 lead.

Zuccaro backed up the big inning, retiring the Lady Patriots in order with a pair of strike outs and a line out in the bottom of the third.

It did not take long for B-P to get back on offense as starting pitcher Nicole Traver retired the Lady Spartans on eight pitches in the top of the fourth.

Broadalbin-Perth threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Traver reached on an error and Rachel Orapello singled to put runners on first and second with no outs.

Zuccaro had an answer, though, striking out the next three batters to nullify the threat and preserve the 7-0 advantage.

Traver and the Lady Patriots allowed only two more Queensbury base runners through the closing innings but could not mount a rally and ended up on the short end of the final score.

Meader led the Lady Spartans' hitters with a double, single and two RBIs, while Ziegler, Zuccaro and Molloy added singles.

Zuccaro gave up three hits in the game, while striking out 11.

For Broadalbin-Perth Rasefke, Traver and Orapello all had singles and Traver earned a pair of strike outs in the circle.

"I think the girls believe they can play out there," Washburn said. "I am happy; the girls are playing well. This is only the third time on this field. We are still learning each other. I am enjoying myself and I think the girls are enjoying themselves playing."
