Shell was an all-state wide receiver for the Gloversville Huskies in 1987 when the Huskies were Section 2 Class B Champions.
Shell continued his football career at Cortland College, where he played varsity football for four years, from 1988-1991. He was named captain of the Dragons and an All-American wide receiver in 1991. He graduated from Cortland College in 1992 with a BSE in Physical Education, and he later earned his Master's Degree at SUNY Albany.
Shell began his teaching and coaching career at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in 1992 and has been head coach of the Spartans since 2001, with a career record of 98 wins and 23 losses. In that time, the Spartans have been Section II, Class A Champions six times and played for the New York State championship four times, winning the title in 2012.
Shell has enjoyed the honor of assistant coaching in statewide All-Star games, including the 2001 Governor's Bowl and the 2011 Upstate vs. Downstate Football Classic. He was inducted into the Capital District Football Hall of Fame in 2011.
Shell, along with his wife, Kim, also head the Shellstrong Foundation, a not-for-profit charitable corporation they founded to give back to the entities that carried his son through a battle with cancer. Matt and Kim live in Burnt Hills with their children, Jacob (12) and Hannah (11).
His parents are Robert and Barbara Shell. His in-laws are Robert and Gladys Gould.
In celebration of the 26th anniversary, all athletes will be provided with special edition gifts recognizing their talents and achievements.
Students are nominated by their athletic director and asked to submit a complete listing of their individual and team achievements including sectional, all-star and state awards, individual medals, and personal bests in order to provide an overall picture of the athlete's performance during their high school career. The athletic director then compiles the information from the student and submits it to the Fulton Montgomery Chamber, who then provides it to the Sports Award Committee. It is of the utmost importance that the student and athletic director provide this information with accuracy and completeness to ensure a quantitative review by the committee. The Sports Award Committee meets with several local sports reporters whose in depth knowledge of student careers can provide invaluable insight and background of each nominee. The committee's decision to choose the top female and male athlete of the year is an arduous task, so a thorough review of the submitted data, along with assistance from expert knowledge is necessary in making the final determination of the winners.
On average this event is attended by 150 students and coaches at no cost as full sponsorship is provided for them by the chamber and local businesses. Parents, family, friends and other community members are invited to attend for a nominal fee.
