Area riders post strong showings at Royal

CAROGA LAKE - A large field of 264 riders took part in the first day of the two-day Central New York Motocross Riders Association event Saturday at Royal Mountain Ski Area.

Five area riders picked up wins on the opening day of competition.

Gloversville's Reid Persch won the 122-open beginner and 122-250cc beginner classes.

Caroga Lake's Jack Mulyca won the 122-open novice class and placed fifth in the 122-250cc novice class, while Fonda's Tyler Blowers won the junior mini 9- to 11-year-old class.

Pattersonville's Dakota Black won the quad schoolboy 12- to 16-year-old class, while Amsterdam's Matthew Hirschfeld won the mini quad 51-90cc production class

In addition to Persch, four other riders picked up wins in multiple classes on Saturday.

Whitesboro's Mitch Daugherty claimed wins in three different classes, winning the 122-open expert, 122-250cc expert and plus 25 expert classes.

Schoharie's Todd Cleveland won the plus 45 expert and plus 40 expert classes, while Bovina's Ryan Sluiter won the 125 two-stroke and schoolboy 12- to 16-year-old classes.

Pennellville's Dominic Grenga won the 65cc 7- to 9-year-old and the 50cc pee wee senior 7- and 8-year-old classes.

Other winners Saturday included Guilderland Center's Chris Johnson (plus 30 novice), Round Lake's Britney Wager (women's), Frankfort's James Demko (plus 45 amateur), Earlville's Amos Hughes (122-open amateur), Queensbury's Charlie Vrooman (plus 30 amateur), Sauquoit's Jim Joy (plus 30 expert), Sloansville's Mark Molesky (85cc 12-15), Ravena's Kevin Scarcella (plus 25 amateur), Schaghticoke's John St. Gelais (plus 40 amateur), Sherburne's Tyler Bigford, Westerlo's Frank Hempstead III (122-250cc amateur), Cobleskill's Ryan Daly (open mini 10-16), and Clifton Park's Gavin Betts (50cc pee wee junior 4-6).

Connor Sawyer of Garner, N.C., who won the 65cc 10- and 11-year-old class, while Cody Sawyer of Garner, N.C. won the collegeboy 14-to 24-year-old class.

In the quad classes, Burlington Flats' Jason Holbert (quad amateur), Norwich's Michael Bluy (quad expert), Moira's Cortney Grant (quad schoolgirl 12-16), Malone's Justin Laflesh (quad novice), Burlington Flats' Ryan Bolton (plus 25 quad) and Corinth's Dareck Graham (mini quad 50cc production) recorded victories.

Several area riders posted top-five showings Saturday.

Amsterdam's Kaitlyn Phillips was second in the women's class, while Amsterdam's Steven Cuomo was fourth in the 122-open novice class.

In the 122-250cc expert class, Gloversville Adam Handy was third and Fort Plain's Brody Zelezny was fourth.

Mayfield's B.J. Smith was fifth in the 122-open expert class and third in the plus 25 expert class.

Johnstown's Adryan Pelosi was third in the 122-open amateur class and second in the collegeboy 14- to 24-year-old class.

Johnstown's Brandon Handy was fifth in the 65cc 10- and 11-year-old class and fourth in the junior mini 9- to 11-year-old class.

Amsterdam's Jeremy Tittemore was second in the plus 30 amateur class, Johnstown's Casey Battisti was third in the 85cc 12- to 15-year-old class and Fonda's Dominick Mancini was fifth in the 122-250cc beginner class.

Amsterdam's Brandi Hirschfeld was second in the quad schoolgirl 12- to 16-year-old class, while Johnstown's Jason Morrison Jr. was third in the mini quad 51-90cc production class.
