Bernice Cummings, a longtime resident of Gloversville and previously of Sharon Springs, died Friday, August 9, 2013, at Mountain Valley Hospice in Gloversville after a short illness. She was 82.
Born in Woodstock (Ulster County) on January 21, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Johnston and Mildred Rose.
She was a 1949 graduate of Sharon Springs Central School and a homemaker her entire life. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking and travel.
Survivors include three daughters, Darlene Swartz and Debra Marrone, both of Amsterdam, and Denise Marrone of Gloversville; four sons, Darren Cummings of Hagaman, David Cummings of Florida, Douglas Cummings of Nashville, and Dana Cummings of Dallas; a sister, Janet Peek of Murphy, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband, Elmer Cummings, in June 1997; a son, Dale Cummings, in 1999; and a brother, Mortimer Johnston, in 1978.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 14, at Lappeus Funeral Home; 113 Park St., Sharon Springs. Burial will follow in Sharon Cemetery, 346 Highway Route 20, town of Sharon. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.
