Several Mohawks earn all-league honors

AMSTERDAM - The Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League announced its 2013 all-league team Monday.

The postseason all-star squad, compiled by the league office, boasts at least one player from all 10 member teams and it includes PGCBL Player of the Year John Nogowski (Florida State) of the Amsterdam Mohawks and PGCBL Pitcher of the Year Eann Cox (Black Hawk) of the Cooperstown Hawkeyes.

Fourteen players selected for the Rising Stars team also were chosen to the all-league squad.

Players named to both teams include Albany's Matthew Dacey (Richmond 2013-14), Tyler Orris (Millersville), Anthony Marks (Coastal Carolina), Dylan Collett (Keene State) and Thomas Belcher (Indiana), Amsterdam's Dylan Smith (Auburn), John Sansone (Florida State), Kyle Barrett (Kentucky) and Matt Snyder (Temple 2013-14), Mohawk Valley's Keegan Long (Saint Joseph's, Ind.), Elmira's Parker Curry (Samford), Watertown's Joe Adel (South Florida), Newark's Donald Frew (Young Harris) and Matt Eckelman (Saint Louis) of Glens Falls.

The league champion and ninth nationally-ranked Amsterdam Mohawks topped the All-PGCBL team with 10 selections.

Amsterdam all-league choices included first team selections John Nogowski (Florida State), Josh Gardiner (Radford), Dylan Smith (Auburn), Matt Snyder (Temple 2013-14), Rich Vrana (Marist) and Mike Urbanski (Binghamton). John Sansone (Florida State), Brian Ruby (Binghamton), Kyle Barrett (Kentucky), Ed Charlton (NJIT) and Chris Kalica (St. John's 2013-14) were named to the all-PGCBL second team. The 10 selections helped the Mohawks to a 35-18 (.660) overall record and a second consecutive league championship.

Albany, Glens Falls and Mohawk Valley all finished the regular season with 26 wins apiece and all three Eastern Division teams had five players each named to the all-league team.

All five Albany selections were collegiate freshmen in 2013.

Dutchmen players that claimed all-league laurels included Thomas Belcher (Indiana), Dylan Collett (Keene State), Matthew Dacey (Richmond 2013-14), Anthony Marks (Coastal Carolina) and Tyler Orris (Millersville).

Mohawk Valley's all-league honorees were Keegan Long (Saint Joseph's, Ind.), Dalton Herrington (ULM), Landon Thibodeaux (Delta State 2013-14), Jared Dye (ULM) and Casey Rodrigue (Indiana 2013-14).

Collegiate teammates Zach Hopf (Saint Peter's) and James Smith (Saint Peter's) of the Glens Falls Golden Eagles both made the all-league first team while fellow Golden Eagles Josh Anderson (Florida International), Matt Eckelman (Saint Louis) and Buddy Putnam (South Florida) also received all-league accolades.

Pitching helped propel the Newark Pilots into the PGCBL playoffs for the third consecutive season.

Three of Newark's four all-league selections were pitchers including closer Donald Frew (Young Harris) and starting pitchers Justin D'Amato (St. John Fisher) and Andrew Sanders (Ithaca). First baseman Max Rosing (Cortland State) rounded out Newark's all-league selections.

Cooperstown matched former division foe Newark with four all-league picks.

Hawkeyes honored included Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Year Eann Cox (Lewis 2013-14), utilityman Nate Lotze (Kenyon), second baseman Ben Hall (UAH 2013-14) and designated hitter Cameron Day (Norfolk State).

PGCBL Championship Series participant Elmira featured three all-league players in outfielders Chris Kalousdian (Manhattan) and Chris Knott (East Stroudsburg) and relief pitcher Parker Curry (Samford).

Completing the 2013 all-PGCBL team were Watertown's Joe Moroney (Kansas), Utica's Michael Pierson (Appalachian State) and Jay Gonzalez (Auburn) who were named to the all-league first team.

Watertown's Joe Adel (South Florida) and Adirondack's Austin Bartley (Shippensburg) were both named all-Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League second team.
