David R. Nethaway, age 66, of Johnstown, passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013, at Albany Medical Center surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness.
He was born September 26, 1946, in Amsterdam, a son of the late Harold W. Nethaway and Nettie E. Ortell Nethaway.
David was a Class of 1964 graduate of Johnstown High School and attended FMCC. He worked for 33 years as a meat cutter in the family business, Nethaway's Market in Johnstown, until its closing in 1993. Mr. Nethaway then was employed at Price Chopper in Colonie for 20 years as a Kosher Butcher, retiring this past June.

He was of the Baptist faith, having attended the First Baptist Church of Johnstown. David was a former member of JAVAC and a past coach and board member of the Johnstown Little League. He enjoyed tending to his gardening and spending time with his loving family. His wit and sarcasm will be missed by those who truly knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Sharon M. Ackerknecht Nethaway, whom he married on August 30, 1964; one son, Michael D. Nethaway and wife, Theresa, of Gloversville; one daughter, Christa M. Unger and husband, Alfred, of Gloversville; two beloved grandchildren, Amanda M. Nethaway and Jackson David Unger; two brothers, Charles Nethaway and his wife, Nancy of Johnstown and John Nethaway and his wife, Kimberly of Rome, N.Y.; brothers-in-law, John Javarone of Texas, Daniel and Bonnie Ackerknecht of Johnstown, Kurt and Leslie of Johnstown, Leonard Ackerknecht of New Jersey, Steven and Holly Ackerknecht of Cobleskill, Eric and Jan Ackerknecht of Johnstown, Christian Ackerknecht of Rhode Island; and sister-in-law, Annette and Todd Looman of Johnstown. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. His dog, Rachael, will miss him dearly.
Visitation for family and friends will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher Street, Johnstown, followed by a Memorial Service at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. R.W. Williams officiating.
Following the memorial service, family and friends are invited to a reception at the Pine Tree Rifle Club, 419 Johnson Avenue, Johnstown, NY.
