Huskies rout Bishop Maginn, improve to 3-2

GLOVERSVILLE - The Gloversville Huskies gave their senior players a fond memory of their final regular season game under the lights at Robert E. Gould Stadium at Husky Field.

Powered by Quantel McGee's 191 yards rushing and three touchdowns, the Huskies routed Bishop Maginn, 49-14, in a non-division game.

"We are getting back on the track we want to be on," Gloversville coach Jared Bongo said. "We made some mistakes and we have to clean up the penalty issue. That is a big thing for me. I preach to our guys that against good teams penalties are going to kill us. If we do that the sky is the limit for us. Our offense can put points on the board and we are giving teams some trouble. Our defense steps up - you never know what will happen."

The Huskies (3-2 overall, 0-2 Class A Northwest) rolled up 527 total yards including 351 on the ground and 176 passing. However, Gloversville was flagged for 160 yards on 15 penalties, while Bishop Maginn drew five flags for 35 yards.

The game got off to a slow start for Gloversville, losing a fumble on its first snap from center, but the defense stopped the Griffins cold to regain possession on their own 17. Two plays later, McGee broke through the right side for an 82-yard touchdown run.

The Huskies defense set up their second touchdown of the quarter when Dante Galster recovered a fumble on the Griffins' 43. Four plays later, McGee carried the ball in from the 15-yard line to help build a 14-0 lead.

Gloversville capped off a 21-point opening quarter with Caleb Dutcher hauling in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Asa Barnhill with 36.2 seconds left in the period.

The Huskies tacked on a second-quarter touchdown when Barnhill hit David VanDenabeele with a 29-yard strike to build a 28-0 halftime advantage.

In the opening half, Gloversville scored on four of its seven possessions and turned the ball over three times on two fumbles and an interception. The Huskies racked up 349 yards of offense in the half and held Bishop Maginn to 131 yards total offense.

The Griffins broke up the shutout bid on their first possession of the third quarter. Jaushi'ir Weaver capped off a six-play drive with his 53-yard touchdown run.

Gloversville answered on the ensuing drive, going 65-yards in five plays, with McGee delivering his third touchdown of the game with a 48-yard touchdown run.

Senior co-captain and lineman Hunter Goodwin helped Gloversville extend its lead to 42-7 when he took a handoff and dove into the end zone for a one-yard touchdown run with 1:38 left in the third quarter.

Gloversville put a final score on the board in the fourth quarter when Galster raced up the middle on an 11-yard touchdown run.

The Griffins (1-4 overall, 0-3 Class A Southeast) put the final score at 49-14 with Nakim Foster's 12 yard touchdown run with 48.9-seconds left on the clock.

McGee finished with 202 total yards, while VanDenabeele had 125 total yards on 91 receiving and 34 rushing yards. Barnhill was 6-for-10 passing for 149 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Defensively, Goodwin had six tackles, while Shon Lewis-Mathews had five tackles and a sack.

"[Quantel McGee] is a special player," Bongo said. "I think we have four guys who can carry the ball between Q [McGee], Asa [Barnhill], Dante [Galster] and David [VanDenabeele]. Who are you going to stop? Inside, outside we have things going. Q is explosive, quick and you never seem to get a good shot on him. He is very slippery. He is doing a great job as a junior and we are excited about having him again next year."

Bishop Maginn was led by Weaver's 120-yard rushing effort.

"These next two weeks are crucial against South Glens Falls and Queensbury. both league games and we need to see what we can do to get in the playoffs," Bongo said. "We are taking it one game at a time though. We have a good chance against South High and against Queensbury you never know what will happen. We will focus on South High this week. We have to go up there on a Saturday afternoon for their homecoming."
