Johnstown, B-P earn top seeds

SARATOGA SPRINGS - The area was well represented when the seedings for the Section II Volleyball Tournament were handed out Tuesday.

Johnstown and Broadalbin-Perth were seeded first in their respective classes, while Mayfield and Gloversville also earned top-three seeds.

"We have goals for what we want to accomplish this season," Johnstown coach Heather McGuire said. "We're staying focused on achieving our goals."

Broadalbin-Perth earned the No. 1 seed in the Class C tournament after going 11-3 against Class A and B competition in the Foothills Council.

"It was a surprise. I thought the committee might give it to Voorheesville," Broadalbin-Perth coach Mike Calvello said. "I thought we would be a No. 2 or 3 seed. I think the committee looked at the strength of the league we play in and the competition we played."

Two-time defending Class C Voorheesville, which went 16-0 in Colonial Council play, was seeded second, while Galway, which went 15-0 in Western Athletic Conference play, was seeded third.

"It doesn't make a difference where we're seeded in sectionals, I'm always nervous," Calvello said. "We have a little target on our backs now. The girls are playing well, and if we do the little things well, we should do well."

Broadalbin-Perth will open its tournament at home on Friday at 5 p.m. in the quarterfinals, facing the winner of today's first-round matchup between No. 9 Stillwater and No. 8 Hudson.

"The girls are excited. They understand we have to play and that no one is going to give us anything because we're the No. 1 seed," Calvello said.

Johnstown will begin its bid for a third straight Section II title and a third straight trip to the state tournament from the No. 1 spot in Class B.

"Getting the No. 1 seed feels good, but on the other hand, it's where you end up that matters," McGuire said.

How the Lady Bills ended the regular season against Gloversville, a 3-2 loss, that served as a wake-up call for the team.

"Gloversville had a good night. That just gave us a reminder that it's not going to be easy to get where we want to go," McGuire said. "Any game day, any team can win."

The Lady Bills went 18-5 overall this season and won the Foothills Council title with a 13-1 record.

Johnstown will open sectional play Friday at home in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. against either No. 9 Emma Willard or No. 8 Ichabod Crane.

"The girls are definitely motivated," McGuire said. "They know that if they lose now, they're done."

Schalmont was seeded second in Class B, while Gloversville earned the No. 3 seed.

The Huskies head into the tournament with a 14-4 overall record and posted a 10-4 mark in Foothills Council play.

"For us, it depends on what team comes to play," Gloversville coach Duane Hicks said. "Anyone can beat anyone on any given day in sectionals."

The Huskies will host No. 6 seed Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk in the quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m.

"I don't know much about Ravena," Hicks said. "If we don't come to play and Ravena does, it could be a short sectional tournament for us."

The Huskies are also hoping the drop to Class B will help them make a deep postseason run.

"We're playing at home and we're on a nice little winning streak," Hicks said. "I think we've got momentum and confidence. We've had a little bit of rest since our last match, so I hope we'll be ready to play more good volleyball."

Fonda-Fultonville also earned a home match after claiming the No. 7 seed in Class C.

"It will be nice to be playing at home," Fonda-Fultonville coach Pat Mancini said. "It's been a while since we've had a home sectional match."

The Lady Braves will host No. 10 seed Hoosic Valley today at 5 p.m. in the first round.

FFCS, which went 12-4 in Colonial Council play, lost only to Schalmont and Voorheesville during the regular season.

"We've had a really good season," Mancini said. "We held our own in the Colonial Council. We only lost to the top two teams."

In Class D, Mayfield (13-3 overall) earned the No. 3 seed and will host either No. 6 seed Lake George or No. 11 seed Schoharie in the quarterfinals Friday at 5 p.m. Waterford earned the No. 1 seed in Class C, while Fort Edward was seeded second.

Canajoharie (12-3 overall) and Fort Plain (9-6 overall) also will compete in the Class D Tournament.

The Lady Cougars earned the No. 7 seed and will host No. 10 Duanesburg today at 5 p.m. in a first-round contest. The teams split their two regular-season matches this season.

Fort Plain claimed the No. 9 seed and will travel to No. 8 Hartford today for a 5 p.m. first-round match. Hartford won the Class D crown last season.

In Class AA, Shenendehowa, Saratoga Springs, Columbia and Bethlehem were seeded first through fourth, respectively.

Perennial power Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake was seeded first in Class A, while Queensbury was seeded second, Averill Park third and Niskayuna fourth. Burnt Hills has won the last 11 Section II Class A titles.

"All the brackets are going to be tough. The committee spent quite a while getting the seeds set in Class B, Class C and Class D. It's going to be a good tournament."

Amsterdam and Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville opted not to participate in sectional play.
