Girls Soccer Roundup: Johnstown, Gloversville fall short in sectional openers

CATSKILL - The Johnstown girls soccer team connected for a pair of first-half goals but could not hold off a Catskill second-half rally and fell to the Lady Cats 3-2 in the opening round of the Section II Class BB tournament Wednesday at Catskill High School.

The ninth-seeded Lady Bills received goals from Diana Horning and Morganne Dick in the opening 40 minutes for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Johnstown kept the pressure on the eighth-seeded Lady Cats only to be turned back by Catskill goalkeeper Heidi Henzi.

Catskill tied the game at two on a penalty kick by Lauren Konsul and a goal from Carly Bulich.

Catskill produced the game-winner with 30 seconds left on the clock when Kelly Meyer capped off the Lady Cats' comeback with her goal.

Catskill advances to the Class BB quarterfinals to play top-seeded and defending state champion Schalmont at 3 p.m. Friday.

ROTTERDAM - The Gloversville Lady Dragons' season came to an end in the opening round of the Section II Class A tournament.

The ninth-seeded Lady Dragons surrendered a pair of goals to Mohonasen's Gabby Esposito and one goal apiece to the Lady Warriors' Alexis Dean and Reiana Opalka to improve their overall record to 3-13-1.

The eighth-seeded Lady Warriors advanced to play top-seeded Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in a quarterfinal match Friday at 3 p.m.

Gloversville closes out its season with a 4-13-0 overall record.
