Mr. Firman J. McSpirit, 83, of Mayfield passed away June 11, 2014, at Nathan Littauer Hospital. He was born June 11, 1931, in Gloversville, son of the late Patrick and Elizabeth Decker McSpirit. Mr. McSpirit was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in Mayfield and was a proud, hard-working agricultural farmer at VanNostrand Farms in Mayfield his entire life.
He loved tinkering with automobiles and gardening, especially his sunflowers. His greatest joy was spending time with family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his children: Susan McSpirit, Mary Ladeau (Edward), both of Mayfield, Michael McSpirit (Margaret) of PA and William McSpirit and his life partner Brian Sprague of Phoenix, AZ. Firman is also survived by his siblings, Joan Carter of Gloversville, Patricia Passino of Washington State, William McSpirit of Johnstown and Fred McSpirit of Gloversville. Additional survivors include his grandchildren, Jonathan Becker, Sara Becker, Michael McSpirit, Joshua McSpirit, Emily Ladeau, Austin Ladeau, Lawson Ippoliti, Amanda Ippoliti, Kristie Krug, Connie Krug, Debbie Krug, Peter Krug and Patrick Krug; nine great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mr. McSpirit was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Ward McSpirit, whom he married April 5, 1958; a son, Timothy McSpirit; a sister, Mabel Ward; and brothers, Francis, John, Dick, Charles, Earl and Thomas C. McSpirit Sr.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 am to 12 noon at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
