Mrs. Emma J. Simonds, 101, a former Gloversville and Johnstown resident, passed away June 20, 2014, in Syracuse, N.Y. Mrs. Simonds was born April 6, 1913, in the town of Mayfield, daughter of the late Arthur J. and Mary Robertson Ketchum. She graduated from Gloversville High School in 1930 and also the former Bishop Beauty School. Emma continued to attend night classes at Gloversville High School, becoming proficient at shorthand and bookkeeping.
A hairdresser since 1930, Emma began her own business, Emma's Beauty Salon, in 1932 which she continued until 1940, when she joined her sister, Alma House at Modern Beauty Salon. In much later years, Emma was associated with Cameo Beauty Salon.
She was a member of the Fulton County Unit 7 of NYS Hairdressers Assoc., also holding the office of vice president, secretary and treasurer, at various times. A devoted member of the North Main St. United Methodist Church, Emma was an officer of the United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Leonard H. Simonds (Judy), Robin L. Raynor (Robert) and Michelle N. Simone (John). Emma is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Michael Simonds, Ryan (Ruby), Jamie (Miranda) and Katilyn Raynor and Riley Simone, as well as great-great-grandchildren, Darby, Isabella and Fiona Raynor. She was predeceased by her son, Leonard V. Simonds; husband, Leonard Simonds; and her siblings, John Butler, Kenneth Butler, Helen Quant, Fred Butler, Arthur Ketchum, Dorothy Place, Elwood Ketchum, Alma House, Betty Warner, Genevieve Marshall, Stanley Ketchum and her adopted sister, Lillian Wilder.
A funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, NY, with the Reverend Christopher Hamm, pastor of North Main St. United Methodist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the service. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
