Do you think New York’s expanded Bottle Bill - which, effective Nov. 8, will require a 5-cent refundable deposit on containers of certain types of water - is a good measure?

Go Green people waste so much money buying garbage I agree with you that people have subverted the usefulness of the bill: You said "It served its purpose then, but now times have changed and there is an increase in the purchase of sports drinks, bottled water and non-carbonated drinks. Go Green, What upsets me is the people that have to drug themselves if it isn't vodka or beer it's sports drinks chemical concoctions that will show that they have addicted society to more substances they can't live without. Expanded subject matter; The illegal drug trade taxiing around the town (hint),and you wonder why town school graduates know other school associates that never ever work, look at your steroid market. Look at the same people that have a excuse to strut around walking place to place using their girlfriends that are working menial jobs to survive to help distribute this poison.

Pollution is pollution no matter the man made cause. Bottled water is something that Americans can't afford with the way things are with unemployment and cost of living. Taxing bottled water for the future of our children to have cleasn drinking water., Sounds like a good idea to me.

I have never understood bottled water. If you want bottled water go to the store buy a reusable container designed for such a purpose as to hold and consume liquids, go home turn on the faucet, fill container up and presto...You now have bottled water. If you are concerned about the quality of your tap water buy a water purifier for your home. You will save tons of money in the long run!

Yes. Buying water is an idiotic thing to do. Mine comes from our artesian spring. Just when the artesians passed thru here and dug it, i don't know, but the ironic thing is I don't think a bank would allow anyone a mortgage without the property having one of those modern deep-sunk cased wells. Not that I care....

Why would you pay for something that you can get for free? Turn on the tap! That could be a slogan for a new campaign. Kind of Like Mike Rowes new campaign...."Brown before Green"!

However, as the amount of returnables increase, so will the cost of recyling increase for the state. Curious as to if or how this increase will be "passed on" to the taxpayer.

I'm not against NY's expanded bottle bill if in fact the returnables ARE recycled accordingly. The original bottle bill of 1982 did contribute to less roadside debris and conserved billions of barrels of oil.It served its purpose then, but now times have changed and there is an increase in the purchase of sports drinks, bottled water and non-carbonated drinks. The bill needs to change to incorporate the increased demand for these items to continue to serve its purpose successfully.

I'll speak up. I am opposed to this because its a bunch of bull crap The state doesnot care about recycling. All the state wants to do with this bill is create more revenue. Doing it this way makes is easier for the sheep to swallow. Can't call it a new tax can you? Even though that exactly what it is. IF the sheep swallow this then maybe the state will push the soda tax again because of course they are only concerned about obesity. Right? VOTE THEM OUT!!!!!

Yes FireKatt! I knew we could agree on something! Although that might not be good for you. Just another reason for me not to buy water, like I needed one already.

Redemption must be good, otherwise preachers wouldn't hawk it so constantly.

I want to believe that the majority off New Yorkers are conscience enough with the environment that they put their empty water bottles out for the recyclable pickup. They do not need to pay a deposit to remind them to turn them in so to get their money back so not to fill the landfills. The State is only hoping that these bottles gets a deposit and people throw them in the recyclables anyway. Each bottle thrown there is a nickel in NY States piggy bank.

I am against any sort of bottle deposit. It is nothing more than another fee(tax) so the state can steal more money from the taxpayer. When I lived out west we did not have a deposit on our bottles or cans. The incentive to recycle was great. We took our recycling to a private recycling company and got paid by the ounce or pound of what we brought in. Much the way scrap metal yard works. You made money. Not simply get a deposit back after redemption.

They're probably out tossing empty water bottles along the local roads.

I never understood why some plastic and galss that contained drinking products, were recyclble and some were not like bottled water and juices...so yeah I think it may be a good thing. It will certainly keep the roadsides cleaner. Now if NY can find a way to put refunds on McDonalds and Burger King bags and wrappers and cups we just might see a little free state.

How many types of water are there? Last time I knew, there was only the one type, the clear, uncarbonated kind we used to drink when we were kids. Anybody (kids in particular) knows the landscape and spare change collectors will benefit from this. Maybe even a few couch potatoes will get off their fat rears and pick these things up to make some change for their cigs.
