Inasmuch as I commend your optimism about "getting involved", I think things have evolved way beyond the average Joe. Oh I will continue to go through the motions of voting and writing my legislators, but feel it's all to no avail. Greed is the culprit that is bringing us down. If the US defaults, everyone will be affected, but it will be the working middle class guy who will be crushed.
laker, that is why we all need to get more involved in the process. The founders would be shaking their heads at the laziness of the American public for allowing these dolts to get the idea in their heads that they are royalty. The founders may have been the rich elite BUT they spent their own money to travel and stay where they were needed. Today multi-term politicos end up millionaires, this is wrong on lots of levels
WE, the people, are powerless. Oh we have the right to vote, and I always do, but as soon as politicians take office, be they libs or conservs, they attach themselves to special interests like leeches... Selfishness and greed over several decades will cause our economic downfall...it's already well underway. Aside from that, we may as well enjoy another beautiful day!
WOW good argument. The Constitution also guarantees, in the first amendment, freedom of (or in your case - from) religion. Read it carefully, and you will see that it establishes government and its limits. We don't have contracts with the population, the government just seems to have forgotten that IT works for US. The Constitution and it's Amendments are not "just a piece of paper", but a contract with the American People. You are reading from a piece of paper statutes that give us our freedoms. Since I do not believe in a creator, then I guess my mom and dad are my creators. At 18, they did give me my freedom. The American Constitution, no matter what paper it's printed on, gives me my freedom. There is no right or wrong, it's a matter of interpretation. It allows you to have a creator and me not.

Soetoro says it is a list of negative things that the government can do. It established our form of gov't. IF you choose to tale your freedom from a document, you chose the wrong one.
We get our freedom (or we used to) from the constitution which limited government intrusion into our lives. You may get your freedom from God, but I don't. I'm sad to say we don't have freedom anymore, but an intrusive government that limits our freedoms through taxes, fees and fines. The never give up attitude you described is gone, it's what the government can do for you instead of what you can do for our government. Very sad.
Annarondac, while you are right in that we are not better than the rest, American Exceptionalism did NOT come from the Constitution. That document defined the gov't structure and limited the gov't "ruling power". We get our freedom from God, our Exceptionalism comes from an old and forgotten attitude that we don't give up, that we are a free and caring people with a never say die mindset. We cowtow to nobody, our leaders are "from us" - elected by us to perform the duties necessary to run the country, state county and city or village government. We have no royalty, even though some think they are. And it is way past time to take the government back - "they" need to be reminded that they work for us.
With this shut down, how about stopping Congress paychecks ?? How about WE cut their salaries by at least 60% ? What we now have is not what the founders envisioned
American Exceptionalism is NOT about being better than anyone in the world, it's about the freedom to pursue personal endeavors our constitution has given us. We are the only republic in the world with these exceptional freedoms.

no blame? i'm just recalling the chain of events and the players that got us here today that is all. actually i feel we should wait till we have better diplomat's before we talk/relate anywhere. keep in mind that america has been kicking the hornet's nest in the middle east for 12 years now (publicly) since 1977 in iran.... just how do you think talks with more ****** off muslim's will go?

yes BoB, lots of sheeple agree with Putin and Soetoro saying that America is not exceptional. The American spirit is nothing special. We just think we're better than everybody else. I tend to agree with that old Canadian that put out the record about 30 yrs. ago. You can probably find it on youtube somewhere. It is as true and relevent today as it was when it came out
