How about take away the sidewalks and raise the speed limit in the city to 55 and lets see how many kids walk safely to school from there. There are big safety issues here. Does it matter where the kids live if the roads are not safe then they should not be walking. GESD busses are all over the city picking up kids at their door but the ones that need transportation are going to be required to walk. GESD is NUTS......

We moved out of the city within the last year to avoid the high city taxes and looked forward to our child being picked up by the bus. I do not understand why people keeping refering to the bus as childcare. How is expecting a safe ride to school childcare? How can you justify spending $24,000 to send one child to school? Maybe that parent should drive their child to school. I guess no one suggest that because it is not PC. Maybe the parents of the childern that take the late bus should pick their childern up. Why do taxespayers pay for childern that take the bus home after sports or detention? I would gladly pay to continue the door to door pick up. I value my child's safety and based on the BOE esitmate of $40,000 a year for 118 families would be about $ 1.07 a day for 184 days.

The school system is for education not childcare. IF you are worried about your kids getting to school move closer to the school. Don't exspect me a tax payer with 5 children who I take to school, sports and other things to pay your bill. I have children in Elem,JR and High school so I do alot of running. But I knew what I was doing when I had children. As for the school board yes they do have children and they do take them and they have jobs and no I am not on the board.

This is apparently not a common sense solution to many. At the time I participated in the poll, 41% stated yes to end door to door bus stops outside the city. HELLO....are you attempting to have additional citizens depart your already economically depressed area? Wake up and smell the mountain grown. Keep the buses going and keep your citizens dumbarse!

When we lived in Nashua, New Hampshire, the school had a transportation policy that worked quite well. If you wanted your child to ride a school bus, you paid $50 per semester per child. The bus then came to your driveway and picked up and dropped off. The average taxpayer didn't pick up additional taxes and it is much cheaper than child care. Do you think anyone would be interested in a policy such as this?

Thanks for the vote of confidence! But no thanks! I can understand that these parents are concerned with safety. I also know that change can be hard. But I'd venture to say that most of these posters voted down the budget and/or the bus purchases. In hard times you have to make sacrifices. They will either wind up paying for the bus transportation through taxes or childcare for before or after school. I find it extremely hard to believe that a family could live outside of the city and not have a family vehicle.

Candlelady...you always have a way of putting things into perspective. I really think you should consider running for the school board!

I live in the city and walk my 5 y.o. to kindergarten. Besides the high price of gas, the excercise does both of us good (especially me!). We live a little less than 1 mile from the school. The walk home from school allows him to release all that energy and the walk to school gives us quality time together. We have been looking to move to the Bleecker area. When I go back to work, then I will have to make arrangements for him. There are lots of different solutions if the district does away with door to door service.

Do any of the School Board members have childern that are effected by this policy? I am sure this policy would have not passed if they did. I wrote a letter to each member of the Board and the Superintendent asking how they determined how much money would be saved by this policy and not one person has responded to me. The Board is not accountable to the taxpayers. The only reason they passed this policy is to be vindictive because the bus purchase did not pass. If they wanted to save money on buses they could start by eliminating the after school bus. I pay enough taxes to the GESD. I want my child to be safely transported to school. Is that too much to ask?

"InnocentParty"... Are you serious? "You can't have it all. Seems that some people are unwilling to give up anything. If you want your kids in sports, PAY for it. If you don't want your kids walking, DRIVE them."

Some people work for a living. Some people need to be to work before 6am or work out of the area and must leave even earlier. Others yet work nights and do not get home until after 8 or 9am. Some people cannot give up their jobs and give up paying their bills in order to drive their children to a bus stop. They may not have family members to help out. If they live far enough away from the school then their tax dollars should pay for reliable safe transportation to and from school for their children. Plain and simple.

These people are not asking for something more, something extra. These people are asking for their children to continue to be picked up and droppped off as they all ready are. I do not believe that is so outrageous.

"Other schools make the children walk to the end of the road to catch the bus."

They might, but do they require kids to walk 2 MILES just to get to the bus stop? Name them if you know of any, and which roads the kids have to walk.

Other schools make the children walk to the end of the road to catch the bus. Why should a Gville student be any different? Maybe the tax payers in Gville should have approved the purchase of the buses when the district could have received money from the state to help pay for them instead of spending the money to lease them. People need to think things over a little more.

The school district isn't a day care provider. Contact your local YMCA. Perhaps mom or dad could drop the kiddies off at 7AM on the way to work.

I lived 4 houses IN the city limits and seemed to walk 2 miles home every day...even if it was dark and cold.

As Discobulus said, the child won't be left behind as long as they get to the bus stop on time.

As for who is responsible if something happens to a child, well, let's see...perhaps the parent(s)? That would be my guess.

I cant believe GESD is stupid enough to even consider this. The morons can truck handicapped and special ed. children from one end of the state to the other at a phenominal expense but yet they quibble about picking up children just beyond your city limits.has anyone even considered the safety factor in this?if something happens to these children who will be responsible??how about the board members give up their mode of transportation and walk for a while this winter and see what kind of opinion they have then.I know if it was my child it would be the last day they would attend your school.do the parents of the children that have to walk get a tax break??if the district is providing half service shouldnt they pay half of their taxes.sounds to me like some fat rats are protecting themselves only.whatever happened to no child left behind??

I hear teachers all the time talk about the well being of your children , and how they always what the best for our kids then ... when they keep asking for raises, maybe they should think about where all the money needs to be and where it is going, I will be very upset if my children are exspected to walk! SAFETY 1st , you want our tax dollars now pu them to use where they need to be. Fixing things that are broke, Great- spending money on all these extra could of went to the bus spending

Please stop using all capital letters in your posts. It’s the online equivalent to shouting. Many people will not read an all-caps post. Remember: Speak softly and carry a big stick. Or: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.
