NELLISTON – MaryAnn Pierpont always has been fond of antiques and dreamed of opening a shop. In November, she made her dream a reality when she opened Memories Old & New at 62 E. Main St., also Route 5, in November.
Pierpont is an Amsterdam native who lived in Long Island and worked as a mental health counselor before returning to Montgomery County to live in Canajoharie about seven years ago.
The store, located in a former residence with a welcoming front porch, resembles a home tastefully decorated with valued antiques, and nearly everything is for sale.
“I wanted to give it a house look,” said Pierpont who operates the store with her husband, Ed. One room is decorated like a dining room with a chandelier for sale while another resembles a sitting room. She said she hopes to eventually open the three rooms upstairs as part of the shop.
The store features several furniture pieces including chairs, tables and more. Decorative dishes from a bygone era and other pieces are available. The store also features several pieces of local significance such as tin boxes adorned with paintings of Canajoharie landmarks like the Boiling Pot in the Canajoharie Creek in Wintergreen Park.
“As we need items we buy them at auctions,” Pierpont said.
The store also sells honey and beeswax products – like candles and lip balm – from the family business Ole McDonald’s Honey Farm near Sharon Springs.
The store is open noon to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday and by appointment. To schedule an appointment, call Pierpont at 332-6294 between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.
