MAYFIELD — The Mayfield Senior High School concert band, jazz band and select choir have returned with awards from a trip to the Music in the Parks Festival at Westfield High School in Westfield, Mass., on April 29.
The jazz band took first place in class A competition and was named best overall jazz ensemble at the festival.
Senior trumpeter Derek Jackson received a medal after being named the most outstanding jazz soloist at the festival.
The concert band also took first place in Class A competition.
Both instrumental groups received ratings of excellent from the judges. Also receiving a rating of excellent was the select choir.
This was the first time a Mayfield choir performed at a festival like this. The choir is directed by Kelly Winters. The bands are directed by Noel Wing.
“I am so proud of every one of the band and choir students for their year long efforts to prepare for these performances,” said Wing.
“Each one of them contributed to the success of their entire respective ensembles. It was a true group effort that paid off.”
While on the trip, the group visited Boston to explore Quincy Market, the New England Aquarium and see a Blue Man Group show. They stayed in Springfield, Mass., because of nearness to Westfield and Six Flags New England amusement park, where the awards ceremony took place.
Chaperones for the trip were Lori and Scott Bumpus, Kelly Harper, Brandon Lehr, David Tomlinson, Kevin Capobianco, Carrie Allen, Jennifer Laubenstein, Pam Mormando, Amy Proctor, Dee Frasier, Lisa Hart, Julie LaFontaine and Darcy Ruliffson.
